Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Alonso did 3 laps yesterday. He said he loved the banking and was ready now for the qualifying. I heard some music from that direction this morning but all is calm now. I'm headed out tomorrow since I get in for free and Alonso promised (at least in my eyes) to let me take a few laps.

I'll be doing the Taste of the 24 during the race so I won't be able to drive. They say drinking and driving is not allowed (I don't know when that started but I bet James Hunt, AJ, and a few more real racers would disagree with these strict rules). Rumors are that when they have self driving race cars you'll be able to pound down as many as your bladder will hold.

Cadillac is on pole for the 24 hour race. They didn't say if it was a coupe de ville, Eldorado, or one of those new cts things. After the guy set the fastest time he pulled into the pits and his chauffer got out and said the car handled well but some champagne had been spilt so he wanted to go around again.

I've been a few times now, went last year... great fun with 4 day garage pass package. A great mid-winter Florida break.

The "international flavor" is all that "Bike Week" was many years ago when top riders and teams from afar would race the Daytona 200. Sadly, that is certainly no longer the case.

After being there, seeing the incredible competition, obvious driving talent and amazing race cars and equipment...I developed a newfound respect for the car guys and huge industry investment and involvement.

Unfortunately other issues prevent going yet again this year. I'll certainly be watching.

Seeing and hearing these GTP prototypes at WFO is interesting, to say the least. Spectator ear protection is suggested, if not MANDATORY, IMHO....these things are both fast and loud.

i went and the porsche 911 rsr in gtlm were the loudest thing on the track. when they downshifted it was frightful.
