POLICE seized 11 'counterfeit' Honda and Vespa scooters from last week's Milan show, Europe's Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers has reported.

The copies were seized from seven exhibitors before the international motorcycle show opened, according to ACEM.

'Counterfeiters not only replicated the models in every detail but imitated the brands themselves,' the association says.

The police operation was carried out in collaboration with the show's organisers.

ACEM said: 'Surveillance measures such as this are an important tool to safeguard consumers from the risks posed by products that enter the EU without appropriate control unfairly disrupting the market.'

Vespa manufacturer Piaggio said in a statement: 'This initiative is of great importance from the point of view of the protection of industrial property rights. As in any other country in which Piaggio has repeatedly intervened against the phenomenon of counterfeiting, the action of the Italian authorities adds an extra measure of protection for companies that compete successfully in markets around the world.'
