I like to lane split.

and sometimes in really small spaces.

Link to original page on YouTube.

Those of you living in states where it's illegal, have you ever wanted it to be legalized?

I want it legalized so badly, I don't want to move to cali over it though. Maybe europe lol. I do it from time to time if I need to be somewhere quick or if I'm really pissed at morning traffic. Usually I make it look like it's just a series of aggressive lane changes so I can argue that it's legal.

Looks a lot like the area around UCI. I split conservatively, most of the time. It's something I only started doing when I was comfortable with it, and after I got sick of being nearly rear-ended.

yeap, that would be Jamboree near the 405.

totally, i only suggest riders that are comfortable doing it attempt it.

and yeah, i've been rear ended once, and almost two other times in different occasions, all in a car.

Not taking those chances on a bike, i'd at least stop in between lanes or close to the side of one if not lane splitting through at lights or stopped traffic. Especially with all these uninsured drivers on the road..

nah my mirrors went under both cars' mirrors.

the noise i think was my boot hitting the foot peg. i was walking the bike actually...i wish i had massive balancing skills to have both feet up lol.

in either case, the bmw's passenger window was down..she never said anything or honked while we were waiting at the light (i waited there for a good minute or two, video was just cut to keep it short).

No ****ing way, I don't think anybody with half a brain would try to split that with both feet on pegs

I wouldn't have even tried that split in the first place, that said you can definitely be stable enough to do it at the same speed without your feet on the ground. Though it's a lot riskier w/o the ability to instantly catch yourself and not scrape something.

I would settle for traffic light filtering, but splitting would be awesome.

I've e-mailed state reps... it's been tried in the past, but never come through.

Yeah, I didn't say it couldn't be done. It's just an unnecessary risk that you'd have to be an idiot to chance

The ninja 250's suspension is so soft that you can lower the front end underneath SUV mirrors like in your video. What I used to do was accelerate hard and mash the front brake to clear mirrors during really heavy traffic. Super sketch though if you get it wrong.

If you had my zx-10 folding mirrors this wouldn't have even needed a second thought. Although passing under the boat would have proved a problem with my Mtb 7-1/2' in the air

I live in NJ and commute to NY through the GW bridge, I lane split every single day because the traffic is super horrible in rush hours and good luck trying to wait.
Some cops here are actually cool with it, Ive gotten one cop who saw me lane splitting and move over to make space.
Another instance where I passed a cop while lane splitting, heard the siren came up but he turned it off after 10s I guess because traffic was standing still and there wasnt any space for him to move. I just pretended I didn't hear the siren and just kept going.
So yes please legalize it everywhere!!! If not, lane split anyway! lol

Lane splitting works best for narrow bikes. Out here in California, I see crazy stuff like full dressed tour bikes or a Harley with extra wide handlebars trying to split lanes. That's really pushing it.

Personally, I don't split, and I still get where I am going. To each their own.

Nothing irritates me more than seeing one of those Harley guys rev their engines while splitting, telling the other cars to get the **** outta the way

lol then you see this:

Link to original page on YouTube.

yeah i dont expect all riders to split, it's a different type of risk we take and it usually ends up as our fault if we crash vs. being the victim of a rear ending. I follow the CHP guidelines and dont split when traffic's moving above 30 (my splitting speed tops out at 40). I also cover both brakes when i'm between lanes.

if i had foam on both sides i would've tried having both feet up just didnt like the idea of giving my insurance to two people. Looking back at it, it was an necessary risk. i think it was the boat above my head that made me want to get out in front.

Yes, all riders should remember that we are ambassadors when we ride on the streets. People remember the one jerk they see on a motorcycle more than they remember one hundred courteous riders.

That guy on the big orange beast only crashed because he looked up the rear brake. Panic rear braking sends you into semi tires kids

I think at the very least it should be legal in stand still traffic. Being stuck in traffic on the highway for hours is bull****.

agreed. I find it funny and yet ironic that some vocal drivers are against lane splitting in traffic, yet they themselves in their cars are contributing to that congestion.

In california, see all those cars outside of the HOV lane every day in rush hour? Single occupant cars clogging up the freeways. At least let motorcycles pass through unhindered.

lane splitting cycles arent the problem with traffic. It's people driving with 4 empty seats. It's a shame other states dont see it this way.

at work we have such a bad parking problem that we have a valet to park cars. Only a handful of people ride motorcycles so there's always guaranteed parking for me. I like that.

As Asian rider, lane split is part of my daily commute, and i do it rather casually. But still with full caution. The basic rule of thumb is if both my elbow fit then it's safe. Also extra caution when you line split beside large truck/ bus. I'd rather wait the traffic stop or move very slowly to pass the truck or there is enough space, like half of car width, to safely pass it with more throttle. You should split fully committed, not panicking in the middle if the car you pass suddenly start to close your path. Just open the throttle more before the car close enough. Predicting which lane the driver may change into also helps.

But to fit your bike really close to someone car is rather impolite, if not outright make yourself at odd with the driver. I dont want my car's mirror get touched or hit by passing bike. But I do make sure there is enough passing space for them in traffic.

First ride of the season and it felt great to be splitting again It would have probably taken my buddy and I about 2-3x as long to get across LA in a car
