battery/electrical issue

Ok so bike is my daily commute, about 1hr each way, highway and traffic nearly 50kms each way.

On the way home tonight my dash lights went dim, headlight went out, indicators stayed solid when on, guessed it was the battery and limped as far as I could until the bike stalled and stopped and wouldnt restart.

No prior warning like hard starting or anything typical like that at all.

I would have thought that the bike running would charge the battery like a car?

Anyway, battery on charge overnight, what are the chances it will continue to live on?

Thought? Advice?

Cheers, Mike

Yes, the generator charges the battery when the engine is working.

Your problem may be:
1) Bad battery.
2) Bad generator.
3) Bad connections or wires.

Thanks mate. Hoping it is just the battery. Spent probably 25mins in traffic with minimal rpm which probably drained it. Strange it didnt charge up during the 80km/hr zone tho which was just before it died.

Ill search generators now

Update:

Charged battery fully overnight. Re-installed it this morning and everything seemed fine, except neither hi or low beam worked, and the high beam dash light does not work either.

Drove it to work but it is obvious that the batter is losing power again (tacho stopped working and indicators are dim).

WTF is going on here?

Ok, continued...

Dropped battery and rectifier into bike shop for testing. Confirmed battery won't hold charge.

New battery, everything re-connected.

Now my headlights won't work, neither low or high beam, and the high beam indicator won't work either.

Relay looks ok, however it does not tick when highbeam switch is activated. Assuming it is supposed to tick like other relays? Is there a way of testing?

Also, possibly related, my tacho light has gone out also. Tacho still works, just the light is out.

Side note, all fuses are fine. Tried swapping other known working fuses around without result.

Please enlighten me. I am sure someone has had these symptoms somewhere along the line?

Regards,
Mike

Have you pulled the light bulbs to make sure they are not blown?

Seems that the dash bulb is unrelated.

Found the solution in this thread:
https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...t=relay+bypass

Bypassed the headlight relay by jumping the blue/yellow wire to the grey.

Relay is stuffed. Can a mod please modify the thread title to solved?

Aaaaaaand battery is flat again.

Lucky it died right near my regular service center on the way to work.

They tested and confirmed reg/rec is dead.

Luckily, the first owner got the extended factory warranty, and it is covered

That's exactly what I was going to say after reading that you replaced the battery and the lights still didn't work.
