So-Cal spring kickoff meet and greet and ride

With as much fun as the last one was and with more people interested we have decided to do another one. To be fair to the OC/SD people we are moving this one down south. We will be meeting at the Starbucks in Dana Point and after chatting we plan to ride Ortega highway out tithe lake for lunch. After lunch the adventurous can head to palomar and I will ride back on Ortega with anyone who is not up to the canyon.

Meet place : Starbucks 32880 Pacific Coast Highway
Dana Point, CA 92629-3422
Near intersection with Via Subida. This is in the Gelsons parking lot. There is a chevron just out side on the street. It is on the north side of Dana point.

Time : 9:30 meet up, 10:00 am kickstands up

Who : everyone! This is open to all ninjette members including family and friends.

The ride portion will be at speedlimits with no passing. We will ride standard staggered formation unless single file is called for. There will be no passing, no splitting and no squid like behavior. It is a good ride for all skill levels. Depending on how many people we have we will ride in two groups. The first group will be for people who want to attack the road and be aggressive and want to "get into it" as Dustin called it. The second group will be speed limit or less and I will be lead for that group. We will ride standard staggered formation till we get to Ortega. Once on ortega we will most Likely ride single file due to the narrow road. We will ride to "the look out" after chilling at the look out we will head to "hells kitchen" for food and refreshments, at that point people cane either ride the lookout a few times. For those not wanting to take the ride down (this is the most twisty section of the road" we can hang out and watch or i can lead the group back. More instructions will be given out at the ride.

Confirmed as going:
Havok, EddieNewyork, cuong, cazper

I will update this post as people add there names.

Last futzed with by Havok; March 14th, 2011 at 08:42 AM. Reason: Edited time and instructions.

I don't think for lack of interest because we all want to meet up... I just don't see people confirming. I wouldn't lock it, lets just lock on a for sure date.

That is $50 well spent... trust me I have used my bag pretty much every ride since I got it... I hate having things in my pockets, and also don't care for having a backpack on. Plus if you get another bike you can easily use it on that one too!

Thanks for clarifying... I wasn't sure if you could or not! As far as I know I can do whatever weekend we decide upon, and Sat. are preferable for me... let's do it!!

We are trying to lock on the weekend... if the 19th works better than so be it... I'm down for whatever weekend, although there is also going to be a ride to Julian on the 6th, so that might make this easier to set up for the 19th... just sayin.

Okay, Julian ride was sweet (minus Cuong's spill) now it's time to focus on this one! I would say let's try to shoot for the 19th and I would say we should bump the meetup time back to 10:00a.m. so that we are actually rolling out at least by 10:30 ish. I'm doing this ride regardless... but I would definitely rather have company... let's do it!!!

The only part of Ortega that is twisty is the drop into the lake area.
It is nothing to be worried about though as speed will be slow. This is not a bomb the twisties kind of ride, it will be new rider friendly that is for sure. If you can make normal turns on the streets and be safe you can do it on this ride as well.

But I'm up and running! I wasn't hoping to discourage anyone from meets. The lowside was completely my fault since I was going too fast and didn't know the area too well yet. Ortega is definitely a friendly ride and the views at the end are worth it.

If I'm back from Vegas by then, I'll be there I'll be on my CBR so Daniel won't feel left out.

As stated above the roads are only dangerous if you attempt to ride above your ability or comfort level. Although Palomar is technically advanced, it isn't bad at a slower speed. Also, as stated... Ortega is nothing like Palomar... Paulette, you will be fine

I just rode Ortega on Sunday... it was a little intimidating, I rode at or below the posted speed limit and still got the butterflies a few times from the blind corners. The worst was on the ride home and the canyon winds were blowing pretty bad and I was being pushed across the road :-\

Anyways, this is the first time I went up... was really unsure of how fast to take the corners so I just followed the posted speed limit.

Yeah, I haven't set up any embed code for the contour site yet. I'll check it out to see if it's possible to add it (like youtube, break, hulu, vimeo, smugmug, etc.)

All fixed! I had created a contour one before, but it looks like that code was outdated. New code looks to be working fine.

See, as you can tell from both videos... pretty mellow ride. Definitely not the same as Palomar... but still a nice ride!

Ok the 19th it is. Meet time is 10am with kickstands up at 10:30.

For those who are worried it will be run at or below speed limit. We are not looking to push any one past there comfort zone and want all that attend to be safe.

I recommend layerd gear/clothing and tinted visors or sun glasses for glare.

Please arrive in proper gear and a full tank. Safe and fun is what are after.

I do not know Ortega very well so if someone who has ridden it more would be willing to take lead (hint cazper ) that would be great. If not I will lead as I am going to run it this Saturday as well

I have no set time. I usually leave Lakewood around 9 on my Saturday rides. I was going to take PCH down and cruise the beach till Dana point then he'd over to Ortega. I guess about and hour / hour and a half to get to Dana.

You are more then welcome to join in! If another time works for you let me know. I'll shoot to be at the Starbucks by 10:30

So we just got done with Ortega, dustin is headed home and I am chilling at the lake. After riding it I see no issue with anyone on this road. While there are some twisty spots at speed limit they are no worse then normal streets. If I had never been on a bike before I would have no issue with it. So all the new riders can come and enjoy the great scenery out here with us. I'll post more how the ride will go when I get home.

Thanks for coming out and riding it with me today Dustin.

I will just reiterate what Jeff said above... the ride is definitely beginner friendly. The only way I was able to "get into it" was to go double or more what the yellow suggested speeds for the corners were. Certainly we can make this a ride at your own pace ride as it's not all that long of a ride to begin with. In fact I may ride it a few times at least from "The Lookout" down to the lake as that is a little more fun as it has more corners.

I would however like to make a suggestion as to the meet up spot though. It was a little bit of a drive from the Starbucks posted above to the start of Ortega Hwy. I suggest that we move to this address as a start point:

Starbucks
31760 Camino Capistrano
San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675

It's right at the start of Ortega at the corner of Ortega Hwy and Camino Capistrano. Also, I suggest that we plan to meet at 10:00 and leave by 10:30 to avoid some of the traffic. I personally wouldn't mind getting there even earlier like 9:30 and leaving by 10:00 but that can be up to everyone else.

Anyway, thanks again Jeff for the ride... had a good time. I also rode from the Lookout down to the base with 1 hand and never once felt nervous enough to need to grab on. Rode it around 40-50mph going with the flow of traffic... I'm just sayin'

I updated the OP. I am going to keep the meet spot the same as the ride through town will serve as a good warm up and get people used to the group. I changed the time and added some instructions.

This is set up for maximum fun for all skills and riders. Please come out and join us. The more interest we hav in these the more often I will set them up.
