Headlights

I just took my bike to the dealer for any electrical problem, and I got it back with the headlight not working. Didn't notice till I tried to leave for work at night. So I don't want to take it back and have them charge me for it if it just needs a new headlight. The headlight looks ok to me, none of the burn marks you usually get when a filament burns out, and the filament looks ok to me. Do I really need to pull every single one of the fairings off the stupid bike to change the headlight? I'm trying to figure it out, but I can't figure out how to get it out with just the side fairings off.

Pretty sure I replaced mine with all of the plastic in place. Can't remember for sure but I think it can be done.

I did both my headlight bulbs with the right fairing off. But it was very unpleasant, I was on my a*s most of the time. It helped me see what I was doing up there. Don't forget to switch over the rubber spacer looking thing onto the new bulb. I wasted so much time trying to figure out why everything wasn't fiting properly.

Any ideas, if the lightbulb isn't bad, what else to check before I let the dealership have a go at it? I don't want to miss anything that wouldn't be covered under warranty.

you can get the bulb out without taking fairings off, just stick your hand up there.

if still doesn't work, check the fuse, and power at socket.

wait, does high beam work?

Check the headlight fuse. Remove side covers and the rider seat and you'll see the fuse box that has white writing on it labeling which fuse is which (headlight, horn, etc.). Pull out the headlight fuse and see if there's a break in the metal. Check the fuse BEFORE checking the headlight bulb.

Perhaps this is common knowledge or not but I thought this vid was great. I haven't looked to much into changing bulbs, it is something I have been wanting to do but put it off because I figured it was going to be a PITA.

This proves other wise.

@Alex is it unreasonable to think that this video should be somewhere in the DIY section? I looked for bulb replacement in the DIY but did not see it, I have been known to miss things though

They're wrong for whatever reason.

You need H7 bulbs and the Phillips Motovision H7 will work.

Also look at:

Philips Xtreme Power H7
Philips Blue Vision
Bikemaster Vision X H7 Bulb
GE Nighthawk H7-55NH/BP
Sylvania SilverStar Headlight Bulb

I like the Silvania Silverstar bulbs, H7 fits perfectly. Nice and bright and does flood the side of the road more than stock and definitely down road a bit more too.

Though, I will pass on this bit. I think I got my bulbs around early June (?). I've put on 15k miles since then, so let's say average was 65 mph. That's about 230 hours the bulb has run in my low beams since I purchased it. That low beam blew last week while riding down to Vegas. Luckily, the trick from that video helped me do a quick road side replacement but it is surprising the bulb blew already.

I wanted to include the amount I've run this vs just saying 4 months because that 230 hours could take normal riders a year to put in.

I figured. Just had me worried a bit at first. I installed the Xtremes with help of video above. Didn't figure out the video was upside down so I was looking for the latch on the wrong side

Cool

Yep - I replaced my low beam about a week ago after watching that vid.

It was very easy to do thanks to the video: I think it took more time to watch the video than to actually replace the bulb.

Really helpful DIY video. My running light went out May 5th and been using the high beam although have not had to drive much due to work schedule.

Question: are the high-beam lights different than the running?

Most of the packs I see are sold in pairs.

If I replace the running with one of the suggestions - (looking for a more white / blue) light - does it affect the output if my high beam and running are different colors?

H7 55W
Philips Motovision
Philips Xtreme Power H7
Philips Blue Vision

The running and high beam lights are the exact same. Buy them in pairs, replace one and keep the second for when another bulb goes out

FYI, the US NewGen is wired so that the low beam is on all the time, and the switch on the left control simply turns the high beam on and off (the low beam doesn't run through the switch at all).

On the older bikes with H4 bulbs, the switch sends power to either the low beam or the high beam. Only one is turned on at a time, depending on which way the switch is.

It won't hurt anything to mix & match bulbs. However, it may look funny if one is an old yellowed bulb and the other is a brand new super-blue bulb. Depending on how different the bulbs are, it's possible your eyes might have trouble adjusting to the differences in light between the different areas. For best results, you'd probably want to use bulbs that are at least pretty similar.

Keep in mind that bulbs do age and are designed to be replaced after a certain amount of usage, not just when they burn out. It's not a bad idea to replace them in pairs if you can't remember the last time you changed it.

Note that the HID-like bulbs get their blue color by putting a filter coating on the glass. It makes the light look more blue by filtering out the yellow, which is what provides the most illumination. You're generally cutting into your ability to see in order to get that appearance. There's simply a limit to how white you can make light from a halogen bulb without noticeably cutting into its ability to actually make light.

OEM HIDs are usually 4300K, and 5000K is popular for retrofits, while 6000K is getting into the bluish light. The PIAA is more like a crisp new light vs. an old yellowed one, while the HID kits are actually a lot whiter.

Question

Thanks for replies, instead of starting a new thread figured it would be good in the DIY Sticky.

I ruled out the motovision since they mentioned the yellow tint and probably closer to stock. I want a brighter whiter or bluer light and since the Ninjette uses the same bulb for highbeam I may as well take the advise and swap in pairs. I am looking between these three;

Anyone have any thoughts or experience on these? May be a bit overkill and a bit pricey on the GE Xenon's but I am leaning towards those.

GE H7-55NHX/BP2 Nighthawk Xenon Replacement Bulb, (Pack of 2)

Philips X-treme Vision +130% Headlight Bulbs (Pack of 2) (H7 55W)

Philips - Diamond Vision H7 Halogen HID Bulbs (Pair)
