Proper Starting Techniques
Can you guys tell me how it's SUPPOSED to be done, I feel like if my bike doesn't start up the first time then I'm doomed to flood it.
Do you ever or always use the choke? How long do you hold the start button before giving up? What happens if you hold it too long? I always keep it on the battery tender when not in use... |

Hello and Welcome!!!
Here's what I do: 1. pull choke 2. push start 3. don't touch throttle, ever!!! 4. as engine revs up, slowly decrease choke so it revs at regular idle-speed 5. you're not touching the throttle right? 6. as you decrease choke so idle-speed is normal, choke will eventually be off completely. |

The reason you can't open the throttle is that the "choke" isn't really a choke, it's an enriching circuit and needs the vacuum created on the engine side of the carb. butterfly to pull fuel through the enriching port. If you open the throttle at all you lose the vacuum.
Oh, and welcome

Just close the throttle, and if the idle speed adjuster (black knob under carb on the left side) isn't screwed in too far, holding the throttle plates open excessively, it will enrich (choke) again.

Having the engine tuned properly - correctly adjusted idle mixture and proper hot idle RPMs - will help starting as well.
Same goes for maintenance. Having the carbs synced, valves adjusted, air filter clean, and plugs in good condition will all contribute to ease of starting hot or cold. Running the proper octane gas will help some engines fire up easier also. For the Ninja, always run "Regular" 87 octane. Ethanol-free gas is best for numerous reasons, if it's available in your area. |

Think you get the idea:
My Daily routine: 1)Gear in Neutral, leave parked in 1st. 2)Choke On 3)ON/OFF Switch On, leave it parked in off. 4)Hit Start switch 5)Leave it warm up until revs increase 6)Remove Choke 7)Add a little throttle to see if it won't sputter and die 7a) If starts to bog out add choke again and give more time to warm up 7b) else place in gear and add a bit of throttle to see if it can support the load without bogging out, once again if does place back into neutral and add choke again

I used to ride slowly and gently with the choke on down the block. Then as the bike warms up, I'll decrease the choke. By the time I get out of my neighborhood (about 3/4 mile) and onto the main road, I can usually get rid of the choke completely.
But nowadays, I have an even better technique. It's called getting rid of the 250 and getting a 300. It could be 30 degrees, the bike starts right up. No need to mess with anything.
