Dark Oil?
I'm posting this as I would like to know if this is normal. Basically, I changed my oil on July 26th. As of today and after going 570 miles since I changed the oil, the color seems to be darker than I would imagine it to be after such a short amount of time and riding. Pics are attached for you guys to see--first one is right after the oil change. Is the color difference normal considering the amount of time and mileage?
ps. oil levels look different only because the bike was on different slopped surfaces when I took them. Other info: -I use Rotella T 5w-40 Synthetic Oil and a K&N oil filter -I let the oil drain overnight before filling with new oil -Before installing the drain plug & new oil filter, I poured some new oil and let it drain, hoping this would help clear out any old oil and dirt out |

Looks fine to me. Oil darkens pretty quickly, doesn't mean it's no longer effective.

Oil typically darkens within the first 50+ miles.

Oil normally darkens because of the crap it cleans off the cylinder walls while the engine is running. Exhaust is normally black from excess fuel and not to mention it is fire. These engines have a wider tolerance then new engines so expect it to burn more oil and to darken the oil a little more quickly than the newer engines of today.
For example. On my car I can change the oil and after 500 miles of city/highway driving, it will be a bit darker. My car is a 2003. On my older 91, the oil will be much darker than the 2003 even though it is the same miles. Likewise, the same car on the interstate at a given speed for 1000 miles may still look brand new. It really depends on the driving style and how well your engine is tuned. To put it short and sweet, it's fine man. Just change it every 3k like normal.

Per the maintenance manual for the pregens the oil change interval is every 6K miles. I think it has gone to 7.5K for the newgens. Someone with a newgen please correct me on this if I am wrong.

i noticed this on my first oil change. while performing this past oil change i realized that i didnt allow enuff time to drain out ALL of the oil before doing the filter change and refill. this time i did, and it looks much better.
