Today's The Day...

Alright, ima Shim my needles on my ninja first thing in the morning.

I have a DanMoto Slip on and the power loss from it is just devastating.. I got #4 washers from Radio Shack and an Offset Screw Driver.

I think ima start with 2 washers for each needle.

Any Advice?

The offset screwdriver will not help much and you may end up boogering the head of the screw. I highly recommend you replace the screws with allen bolts.

Jiggles is in the hospital and high on pain killers and disappointment. We must forgive him.

As for tips... be very careful not to damage your diaphragms, otherwise it is pretty straight forward.

Buy cap socket screws (ie: allen head's), buy a philips dry-wall bit.

Work slowly and carefully. Attempt to not strip the heads. If you do, use a vice grip and wrestle those suckers our. After successfully shimming, replace all the screws and live happily ever after

Vice grips or you can do like I did and dremel a slot for a flat head screwdriver.

Really? Even my tightest screws came out with a heavy-duty pair of vice-grips.

post a picture of how it looks. An impact screwdriver may work if you have room for it

Place it on the screw and wack the end with a hammer to budge it loose.

I had to dremel a slot in one of mine and use a flat head.

come on guys... is nobody going to tell him that the screws on the carbs are Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screws, not regular old Amer'can style Phillips?

Okay, I will... The screws on your carbs are JIS. They might look like regular old Phillips head screws but if you try to work on them with Phillips head screwdrivers you will strip them out. The profile of the "X" in the head is subtly different.

What @MikeBudd was trying to tell you is that the profile of the small size of the standard (Home Depot) dry-wall driver bit is the same as a JIS screwdriver. He was saying that you can use that to work on the carbs. Or, after you've struggled with a Phillips head screwdriver to get all the screws out, destroying them in the process, you can then go out and buy some good stainless-steel allen head screws. Your choice.

Haha lol yeah they are jis but you can get them out with normal american style if you put it in the hole and wack it with a hammer. :P honestly i dont know how you can not get it out with vice grips. try harder.

All excellent and all true.

And all too late, sadly. He's already stripped the screw.

armo55, you have my sympathies and I wish you luck in fixing the problem. Having said that, search and homework is your friend.... the JIS and drywall bit info has been covered extensively in the past. Now you know how important finding out EVERYTHING about what you're about to do can be. Learn from this experience.

Prepare, prepare, prepare, measure, prepare some more, measure again, triple-check and THEN work.

This beats kind-of sort-of understanding what you're doing, going to work, making a costly mistake, trying desperately to (maybe) fix the damage and finally finding out what you should have done in the first place.

FWIW for anyone wanting to work on the carbs without suffering a "DAMMIT" moment:

It is MUCH MUCH easier in the long run to remove them from the bike. You are less likely to bugger them. The pain and hassle are worth it IMHO. It's what I did and the actual carb work was 100 percent trivial as a result.

I figured it was safe to say that he already knew he needed the JIS bits if he read that far to where he got an offset screwdriver and the necessary washers since in all the DIY threads mention it.

Alirght guys, I just wana say i have done research and read every single carb shim post out there... I am aware for JIS screwdrivers, didnt feel like ordering them.

So i stripped the **** out of the screw and i went and bought a diamond tipped small circular blade for the dremel, made a like and screwed it out.

I put 2 washers on each carb needle, and then I checked everything and closed the cabs securly, but on some allen screws.

It didnt seem to improve my bikes performance much, then i removed the snorkel. It helped a bit more.

Overall, i am a tiny bit more satisfied but it was NOT worth the 4 hours. Maybe my expectations were too big? and im starting to grow out of this bike? (Been 10 Months)

Any advice on what to watch out for?

My guess is you haven't undergone a sudden spurt of personal growth. You're probably no more Zen now than you were before you bought the EX-250.

Beyond the existential questions of life and being, I'm guessing your riding skilz haven't progressed to a point (of total mad sickness) where they're rendering the EX-250 useless/pointless in your hands.

It is possible, however, that you've got the onset symptoms of a mild case of "600 SuperSport proximity phallus enlargement disorder", which is when you begin to image that your penis would look much bigger if you were ridin' a Gixxah'.

Mayhaps learn to work on the screamin 30hp of the 250 before moving up to a 100hp 600. But, like you said you were aware of what you needed and didn't feel like ordering it. So, I guess it doesn't matter what advice you ask for, you won't follow it.
