Should I buy a bike to part it out?

Today I found a used 09 ninja 250 for sale nearby. The person selling it says they have the title but they laid the bike down and said "the neck is bent"; which I assume means the front of the frame was bent . I shot them an email asking for more info and pics of the bike. What I would like to know is if it would be worth my while to buy and part out the bike on the forums. The bike seems like one heck of a deal to me ($600) but I've never bought a vehicle to part it out before. I haven't received a response with detailed pics of the bike or answers yet but I was also thinking I could use some parts for my bike if something were to happen.

The ad says Woodbridge, though I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was a scam or had already been sold.

Don't used 250 motors typically sell @ $500? Seems like a good deal

No, your not the only one. That's why Im waiting for more info / a response to see the damage and condition of the bike. I don't plan on buying it unless I could make a profit on it.

If either of you guys end up getting it and the front wheel is good and a black one, I would buy it from you. Also a rear brake disc and caliper.

The bike was sold; the guy emailed me back and said it was already gone a while ago; I didn't think anyone would bump the thread . Sorry.

Today I came across a 2007 zx6r for $3000. it's missing the side fairings and a mirror; it also has a small dent in the tank. The seller said it fell over in his trailer and he's selling because he has a baby on the way. He lives close and since I work all day tomorrow I'm hoping he will still have it on Friday for me to go look at. I might be buying a new bike to ride or fixing her up for a good resell value if I end up buying it. We will see .

3K for an 07 ZX6er is a great price, also depends on how damaged it is an dif its totaled or untitled. I would say if the repairs are above 2k it might not be worth it( 5 for an 07 still a fairly good deal)

The only damage is the dent on the tank (or so he says). He also said it has a clear title. I'm sure I could find fairings and a mirror for under $500. He told me he might be able to include 1 of the fairings / turn signals with the bike. If it's not sold by friday then I'll see what happens. One of the main reasons I didn't buy a larger bike to begin with / yet is mainly because of insurance rates.

Ok; I went to see the bike today at noon. I got there and the first thing I noticed was that the front right fairing was cracked in two places and the dent in the gas tank was actually 2 small dents close to one another which I really didn't care too much about). The rear seat had a 5 inch slash on the side which was very noticeable; there was a poorly repaired crack in the rear right fairing and a few small scuffs around the bike. It has a 2 bro's full exhaust and with the bike sitting there idling it was about as loud as my 250 at full throttle . I blipped the throttle a few times and it serious hurt my ears even below 4k rpm. He said he had some engine work done to the bike which is why it sounded like it idled a little roughly . The inspection was from a few weeks ago which he said he had done after the bike tipped over in his truck (he told me his trailer in an e-mail). He also pointed out the new pilot power front tire and the forks which he said were from a 2010 zx6r. The forks made me think that the oem forks could have been bent and then replace after a wreck; not sure though.

The hugest plus I could think of is that the bike fit me amazingly. I noticed how much better quality parts were used than my ninjette as well. The tank was the perfect shape and the seating position is exactly what I'm looking for. It felt like the right bike for me but I just had a feeling that I should walk away from it. I didn't even bother test riding it because honestly the bike is so intimidatingly loud that I felt it would shoot out from under me and rocket to the moon. I know it's a 600cc in-line 4 so it's not insanely liter bike fast but it sounded louder than most liter bikes I've heard (sounded as loud as a Harley). And yea, I know 600cc inline 4's are still very fast even though I've never ridden one. Now I'm second guessing my decision; I'm considering offering him around $2700 for it after taking a test ride to see how it runs and handles; even after I told him I'd have to pass . I'll have to sit on the idea for a little while and take into account the amount of money it would take to get the bike back to good shape.

come to think of it; we were in his garage so it's obviously gonna sound louder. . But still; that thing was loud.

Good deal, the damage you described sounds like he went down pretty hard. Since is yours now I would suggest look for tiny stiff that might affect you in the future like cracks in the welds( specially the neck), maybe have a professional mechanic look at the engine and make sure everything is in working order( like the engine's bearings, cracks in the engine case, etc). Still this sounds like a great deal and if you can keep yourself on a small budget like you have planned, this might be an excellent project.

Congrats on your sale and good luck.

Hey Cody, I am curios to hear how this turns out for you. If it is a solid bike it sounds like a really nice deal!

did you say how many miles it had on it? Too bad it's so loud.

Thanks everyone! I bought the bike with about 9,100 miles on it. I did end up finding a crack in the lower right rearaet which has caused the rear brake lever to become useless and it just dangled down. The front dual caliper brake is more than enough by its self, not to mention while engine braking. I will be fixing the rear brake issue asap. I also discovered a few other small things like the material on the rear seat is ugly and its not the own one. I rode the bike around a little more last night and ended up testing more critical things out such as hard braking, throttle sensitivity, and looked over the bike. The one thing I love about this bike is that the first valve adjustment isn't until about 15,000 miles. Unlike my ninjette which is still getting the 7,500 mile service . So much for the promised 2-3 days top from the dealer; now they are closed until Monday. Anyway; if there was one thing I learned from the short ride last night, its that throttle control is unequivocallly important and that my ninjette much more flickable and fun in the twisties I'll be posting up pics in my "The big brother" thread located in the ex-ninjette lair.
