keep on heating it with the torch and try using an impact driver to get them out.

how long did you heat the bolt? If I remember correctly, it takes quite a bit of heat to break down the red loctite they use on them.

It takes a lot of heat and an impact driver to get those screws out.

If you've already rounded the screw head your only choice is to drill. Get a drill slightly larger than the screw bolt and drill straight in. Once you remove the head you can remove the end weight. There will be enough bolt left to grab with vice-grips and again use a lot of heat.

When/if you replace the end weight use Blue Loctite instead of the Red that they use at the factory.

I did the same thing - have not tried to drill it out though. I am not looking forward to the process either - might try it when the weather cools down.

Oh, and put HEX bolts on instead of Philips afterwards...much easier to change later on (heated grips etc).

++1 blue loctite.

Allen bolts are a better option.

Those bar ends are ridiculous, but I think Craig's got the right idea. I'd follow his advice and try drilling off the screw head.

I did this recently to straighten my left bar.

I used a heat gun and an electric drill. Set the drill on low, heat for a bit and then try to hit it with the drill. Just goose the drill to see if it starts to spin, on low it should just bog down until it starts to spin.

Worked like a charm on both sides. But the heat gun, or torch is the important part. Once you break down the loctite it's easy.

cheaper alternative to impact driver is ratchet wrench and put in a screw driver bit and heat it up with a small torch. heat it up for 3min and use ur ratchet wrench/screw driver.

The secret really is heat, we cooked it really good with a small butane torch and it came out with a regular screwdriver even though the screw was all farked up.

I hope mine works. I don't have anything but a screwdriver and a $3 "pencil torch" from Harbor Freight (it is butane). How long did you have to roast it?

I think I need to order some JIS drivers.

Hey Jet, my offer is still on the table if you need help. Phillips #3 should work.

I heated the screw ONLY for about two and a half or three minutes and it came right out.

But now that I've fixed that problem, I have come upon another, my front wheel seems to be out of alignment a bit. It doesn't wobble, or vibrate when I ride, it just looks cocked ever so slightly. Can a shop fix this? I don't want to pay 500 for a new front wheel.

If the wheel spins true, i.e. no side to side wobble, then the alignment issue is in the fork/triple clamp assembly. If neither are bent then it's fairly easy to loosen things up and realign everything.

I don't know why I didn't think about this when filling out the survey from Kawi, but it would have been good to mention the evils of using RED loctite on the barends.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that when I saw that the torches were so cheap. No one mentioned at that point that you might need BOTH the torch AND an impact wrench or ratchet driver. I later asked but finally found my answer elsewhere (some people reportedly do need both).

You guys aren't kidding about that bar end screw! I just had my first session on it. I heated it and put a pipe wrench on a big #3 screwdriver. The shaft stripped out of the screwdriver handle. I don't have real air tools. I'll try a socket solution on it for round #2.

What allen/hex bolts fit flushly with the conical shape in the bar end?

i just replaced mine today with some spike bar ends.. man they are on there! i used a 1/4" drill bit and just drilled into the phillips screw until the head fell off.. then the bar end slid off, used a pair of vicegrips to pull the threaded part out of the handle bar.. what a pita! had a ton of red threadlocker on the stock barends.
heres the end result of the stock barends.
