Simple pleasure, cantaloupe

Picked up a cantaloupe at Aldi. Usually you got to eat those fast cuz there is a fine line between ripe and the compost bin.

it was just perfect... I nearly ate the entire cantaloupe, mind you they are the size of a football.

I felt like a python that had just downed a capybara... curl up in the corner and digest it.

damn, just talking bout it makes me want to stop and get another on the way home... they would find me 3 weeks later

Well chief, looks like he OD'd on "Carolina golden loupe"

Fallon is quite famous for its Hearts o' Gold cantaloupe. Folks come from all over to buy it.

But I'm in the melons are yuck camp. Maybe too many summers being stuck eating nothing but watermelon and cantaloupe while growing up. Can't stand the taste or texture of melons.

You're welcome to my share, as long as you reciprocate with your share of the berries!

Fresh in season melons are the best part of summer from a culinary point of view. YUM!

I love all melons! I still can't distinguish the difference between cantaloupe vs honeydew. All I know is that one is larger and green and the other one is smaller and orange. Don't know which is which.

Now.....what's the secret of picking out melons? The method I use for watermelons:
1 - find one that has a small hole (where it used to attach to the vine)
2 - slap it with my hand to hear the "thud". The more thud or vibration I hear, the sweeter it'll be.
3 - also find the heaviest one for its size. More water inside. Much sweeter

Ok, maybe not....but that's how I do it.

How about for honeydews and cantaloupe? How do you choose those?

First look for the ones that don't have much yellow spots, this is from the melon laying on that side as it matured. Then I look for the greenest, the more vibrant the better.

squeeze them a bit, the ripe ones will flex and be a bit soft, the green ones are like a rock.

smell the spot where the melon connected to the vine. the more it smells like cantaloupe the sweeter it will be.

hard and no scent... green and tasteless

soft and no scent ripe and tasteless

Got to try the "thump" method, cuz Soft and smells like cantaloupe.. can be ripe or rotten...
