Pronouncing names wrong

I'm guilty of a few of these
http://uk.style.yahoo.com/post/14357...ng-these-brand

Porsche was another one and don't even start me on Reince Priebus or Mr Cholmondeley (Mr Chum lee)

There's others you can pronounce, but could never admit owning at a biker bar like the "Mazda Bongo Friendee" or the "Peugeot Bipper Tepee" and "Renault Kangoo"
(Luckily I drive a Passat)

"Yes, I know it's spelled 'Raymond Luxury Yacht' but it's pronounced 'Throat Warbler Mangrove.'"

I can't afford most of those, so I don't feel guilty.

Maybe it's an American thing, but I don't feel the slightest hint of guilt when pronouncing non-English names in an anglicized (americanized?) manner that is invariably understood by my anglophone listeners.

What I always find amusing is when I watch a video review recorded by an American who pronounces the letter 'Z' as 'zee' rather than 'zed'.

I saw a video the other day where the reviewer kept referring to the "Kawasaki Zee Ex Six Arr"... Hee hee hee... sounds really funny to my ear.

My friend grew up watching Sesame Street on CBC (we are very close to the border) and he never knew anything but the French pronunciation of the letter Z.

And it sounds just as funny to us when you say zed.

I think the first time I heard zed was when I was in high school, working in the Amway call center (I took the orders from the crazy soap-sellers, I didn't actually sell soap). I think it was from someone on a Caribbean island, but it may have just been someone who was originally from another country.

you were in Amway too??

what a coincidence!

I always pronounce "Zee" when conversing in English. I pronounce "Zed" when conversing in my native tongue.

I'm about 15 miles down the road from their headquarters. A number of my family members have worked there over the years. One year I went to the Christmas party with my aunt and uncle, and got to sit in the indycar.

Some of us in high school got into a school-to-work program there. It was better than bagging groceries, and paid over twice as much. A friend who was also in the program stuck around after HS, and actually helped launch Quixtar, the online side of things.

It's hard to not have some interactions with the DeVos and VanAndel families these days, as they own a good chunk of Grand Rapids.

Living with a singer and speaker of many languages, my pronunciation has been so thoroughly beaten into submission that I was able to correctly pronounce even those brands I had never heard of.

Not pronounced wrong but..
when I was in high school, my drum teacher told me a story about how a lady came into the shop and asked "how much for the AHAMAY?" and he said that they didn't sell any "AHAMAY"s, so the lady took him to a drum set and pointed at it.
Someone had put the clear plastic thing on the drum backwards and since all the letters in YAMAHA are symmetrical, nobody else had questioned it or noticed it.
