[faster and faster] - 2016 Yamaha XSR900 is one of the most impressive 'Faster Sons'

The 2016 Yamaha XSR900 looks pretty good we think. Especially the yellow-and-black 60th anniversary paintjob. And that three-cylinder engine will hopefully have the poke to go with all the flash

The latest Yamaha ‘Faster Son’ is the new XSR900, which joins the Japanese company's retro-styled 'Sport Heritage' range, paying tribute to iconic motorcycles of Yamaha’s past. The focus has been on the use of high-quality metal components as far as possible, minimising the use of plastic bits - take note of the 14-litre fuel tank with aluminium covers, split level stitched seat, aluminium fenders front and rear, aluminium side covers, a sporty aluminium headlight stay and matt black exhaust system with contrasting polished muffler end cap.

Of course, the XSR900 also has the oomph to back up the glitz, with a 3-cylinder 850cc engine with R1-inspired crossplane 270-degree crankshaft for strong acceleration and traction. Yamaha have not quoted any figures, but claim that the engine produces "deep linear torque" and has been optimised for "smooth, exciting power delivery to high rpm." There are bits like Yamaha D-MODE engine power control, multi-level traction control, slipper clutch and ABS etc., as even faster sons with retro styling cues can't do without electronics these days.

Other interesting bits on the XSR900 include a lightweight chassis with CF die-cast aluminium parts, adjustable 41mm USD forks, adjustable linked-type Monocross rear suspension, and a full range of 'Yard Built' custom bolt-on parts which will be introduced shortly. Available colours include a 60th anniversary black-and-yellow paintjob, matt silver-gray and matt dark blue. The bike will be in Yamaha showrooms from February 2016.
