I like how there's an MSF ad for your threads. Even the interwebs know how much you like crashing.

Opera is awesome. Although firefox isn't so bad now that they copied operas format. And yahoo has really interesting comments on their articles

I didn't know Apple had an $8K model... Learn something new everyday...

The real question is, could you sell your $2000 scrap in 5 years and get more than half of its value back?

I won't ever need to sell it, just upgrade parts as I see fit

I'll build a desktop on apple right now that is equivalent to mine just to humor you. Mine is already over a year old so lets see what similar hardware costs from them.

Ok so the iMac, which doesn't even come close lol, comes out at $3000 before tax and shipping. Its still missing about 4TB of storage. It's single gpu is a little better than the 6970 I have but, I have 2 of these in my comp. 256gb SSD in both. Again, its competing against 1yr+ old hardware

then the Mac Desktop, now it gets a little interesting. The Mac comes in a bit over $4000, similar processor, ram, missing 1TB of memory but thats ok. The GPU, severly lacking. Mac comes with 2x 5770 vs my 2x 6970, thats not even close. So really lacking on the graphics. Also the mac doesnt come with a screen, the apple screen is $1000, **** that lol.

So, I can't even build a mac that compares to my hardware

What operating system are you using? Benchtest it against a mac with lower specs and you will be amazed. A better OS always wins.

Just FYI...

lol.

but really. as someone who uses windows, mac, and linux on a daily basis. someone who has developed for all 3 in depth. i can say with full sincerity that linux is a superior operating system in every sense.

name something you can do on any operating system ... any computer, that you can't do on linux. chances are the only things you will be able to name are very specific, very new direct3d based windows games. or highly proprietary software.

the only thing that mac/windows has over linux is wide spread acceptance. except these days that isn't really the case anymore. servers are all linux. your phones are all linux. even IOS phones are a bsd core with obj C shitware on top. your cable box and tv runs linux. the international space station is now mostly linux. most of nasa on ground is linux. the newest chipset hardware coming out of intel and qualcomm is all being supported directly on linux over other platforms. this is a massive signal that windows is dead and that linux is becoming the defacto standard. after nvidia and intel are fully switched over to primarily supporting linux based drivers, PC video game developers will follow (as a video game developer, i can explain the reasons behind this if you want, but it seems kinda obvious.) really once gles 3 and gl4 are full hardware support on latest firmwares from nvidia on consumer level cards and chipsets, there will be no reason to not target linux as the main sku for PC games. direct 3d is already dead unless you are working on an xbox game.

Apple has a $85,000 one....but its not listed on their website. Commercial order only, and it's WICKED.
MacBook Pro here, and it was worth every cent.

I run macs at an ad agency. The quick keys for my programs (Adobe CS) are super fast on the mac. I can make it fly super fast, almost too fast, have to slow down my key commands at times.

When I have ran a PC using CAD and other 3D rendering programs (Creo) the whole system bogs me down and I can't use as many quick keys.

Macs feel a million times faster when using my applications. Is it just my familiarity with Mac? I don't like the key commands on windows, sometimes it takes 2 quick key commands to do one thing - and the mac takes 1 quick key command to do the same thing.

PCs are great for my video gaming... but yet why am I playing Quake 4 and Doom 3 on my Mac Pro (5770) all the time? I do like my PC for gaming also, and have a decent amount of games.

Never ran Linux - if I was running Adobe CS programs on it would it be fast? Just curious.

I think it's the keywords "suck" and "ass" that do it.

Is this an OS war now? For my money, as a BI Analyst and Developer for a fortune 500, windows has suite integration down to an art for what I do, I have all my visual studios projects in team foundation server along side all SSMS scripts and procs so I can colab on projects across multiple jurisdictions effortlessly, macs "just work" but for hardcore enterprise solutions, microsoft have a very strong lineup, and "Just works" better.

Linux is great, but for serious business applications and client side integration the availablility of tools are lacking, the company I used to work for went open source after microsoft dropped the CIO from the MVP list of something, the switched back within nine months at great expense.

But in My SQl and Java it would take me 10x as long as C# and t-sql.

But sure, no reason not to run Linux in dual boot, but windows is my main OS.

Can Linux run power director 11? I'd imagine it does steam and blizzard games right? If it does all those I'd consider it but honestly, what would I be gaining by switch from windows to Linux?

People overstate the importance of the OS, after all it's just an interface between hardware that executes applications, the best way to determine what OS you want, is to find out what software you want to run, the find an OS that will run kt all.

Besides you cam run two OS's on one machine with a boot open at startup using a boot manager like GRUB, if you already own a windows key, no reason not to have both.

Linux is a great OS for highly technical people, but if you put a regular user in front of it they are lost. I used it as my primary OS for years, however, I was constantly having to open a terminal window and run CLI to get stuff done.

Linux is also a great OS, probably even the best OS, for many workloads - some covered already. But when it comes to a fully integrated user experience it can't even hold a candle to the MS stack - and yes, I'm comparing the MS stack to an OS, because that's what it's competing against. I also had to use OpenOffice for fricking years - it was fine for some stuff, but lacked lots of advanced features. This forced me to go back to MS Office, which also forced Windows.

I use linux every day and it does work but having to load a vm with xp to print because there is no printer driver for our printer that can do the duplex function is stupid how hard is it to add that function in a driver.

And secure its no more secure then a properly setup windows box.

Look into kon-boot and then tell me how secure linux is.

My non techie wife and my 4 year old daughter both have linux on their computers and have no trouble at all. Sure, I do any technical stuff, but I had to do it again n Windows as well.
