Hello from northern CA

Just bought a 2012 250r for my girlfriend. She is new to riding, but has her license and wanted to be able to ride with me. I figure I will be doing the brunt of the maintenance myself, and I've found forums are the best place to get solid intel quickly!

Oh yeah, and she rode it for the first day yesterday and dropped the damn thing, busting up the right side fender, so I will be looking for parts soon, too! fml this is going to be interesting

Yeah not totally surprised, but I guess I was hoping it would last more than one day! I saw it happening, and I was mounted on my steed, so there wasn't anything I could do, but watch. Good thing is she didn't get hurt, and is going to keep trying. I suggested we should hold off on new plastics for a while

At least she didn't tip over into me!

Howdy, not too far from me.

Good plan to hold off on the fairings. Let her get the experience she needs and when she is confident, then you can look into replacing them.

If you two ever cruise over the hill, lemme know! I'm always riding in the Sierras around Tahoe.

Sounds good! I'm going to keep working with her to get her comfortable, then we will start planning trips

Hey! I always stop at the In n Out in Auburn on my way to Tahoe. Like others have said, no need to replace parts yet, because chances are she'll drop it again. Make sure she doesn't get discouraged if she does drop it!

Next time you're up try Ikeda's, overpriced, but really good burgers! Three exits past the In n Out.

Your dead on about the discouraged-ness. I just said, you're okay and the bikes okay mechanically, so just try and forget about it and have fun. It's all about having a good time out on the open road!

So I found a guy on here who bought the exact same bike, never rode it and took off all the plastics to make it a track bike! $600 for the complete fairing set minus the tank, shipped, and he threw in the right side mirror for free. The solo right side brand new would have cost almost $400, so I figured this was the way to go. Gonna wait a while to install, but now if there are any other drops, replacement parts will be in the garage!

Frame sliders are your friend!! Mine saved my old bike from my first timer drops in the yard and once when i dropped it at a gas station.

And my leg once...

Make sure they say say "no cut" if you look at other ones.

Welcome and you are a good man for buying the GF a bike! A minor suggestion that could make your life easier-send her to a MSF course-dont try to teach her everything yourself. I learnedly early on just 'cause you're into somebody doesn't mean you can teach 'em anything. Or maybe that's what my man keeps saying about me...I dont know & I don't hear so good with my helmet on and my engine revvin'

Thanks to all for the welcome and tips.

I picked up a Shogun frame slider kit, looks pretty solid, and was a good deal on eBay. Also managed to find a complete new set of plastics here on the forum. So first the sliders, then lots of practice including the MSP advanced riders course, then maybe the new plastics
