Bike not starting......

Have a 2013 300 that will not start. Here's what I got.

-Starter locked up so it got replaced.

-Bike sat for probably 9-ish months without being ran.

-Just bought a new battery today because the old one was dead.

-Bike turns over and starter functions properly but bike wont fire up.

-Lots of strange clicking and buzzing coming from what I assume is either the primary or secondary tps.

Any gurus out there with wisdom to bestow would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome!

Some clarifications please.

Quote:

Was it starting and running OK before starter died? Any idea why starter locked up?

Quote:

What is battery-voltage before cranking? And battery-voltage during cranking?

Not TPS, but throttle-butterflies. Could be them... but... can you get video & sound of this?

Also do you have access to oscilloscope? This is literally a 5-minute repair with oscilloscope.

Ran great before the starter went out. Not sure what caused it to lock up. I'll get a video of it right now.

10k miles on the bike. Other than a replaced battery and starter, nothing outside of routine maintenance .

That sounds like a relay clicking. The starter's not even turning and the engine's not turning. What state of charge was battery in when you installed? Really need to get voltage of resting battery and voltage while cranking. Very useful data.

I think the clue is figuring out why the previous starter died. It dying may only be a symptom caused by actual problem. That problem may still exist.

Can you bump start bike in 2nd-gear? Does that turn engine or does it just skid rear-tyre?

put the battery on a charger and get it fully charged. be honest how many times and how long did you hold the start button before the other starter went out? holding it too long with a weak battery burns those bad boys out.

I was also thinking of bump starting it too.

Battery is brand new with a battery tender on it. As i stated previously i do not know why the starter went out. One day it worked the next it didnt. I know enough about automotives not to hold down a starter when an engine wont start. I am at work and will post a video of it as soon as i get home.

PS: Super classy signature. Glad to know who rhe adults are.

1. you let the bike set for 9 months
2. Clicking like that means there is not enough juice going to the starter.
3. some of us have been around longer then you and have a sense of humor.

Provided the battery is adequate and cranking...i'd suggest to drain the tank and float bowls....9 month old ethanol fuel is not conducive to proper combustion. Proceed start attempts using 100% fresh fuel.

A Ninja 300 is not going to have float bowls to drain. It is a fuel injected motor.

For what its worth:

Got the bike to start by popping the clutch on a hill. After doing so the bike will start up and run. However, it sounds like the starter motor is trying to engage every time I hit the kill switch. (Potentially why the original starter locked up.)

PS: JohnnyBravo thanks for clarifying that. I appreciate it.

Regardless thanks to everyone for giving it a shot.

Sounds like you may have shorted wiring and/or switches. Use voltmeter to verify you have voltage when and where there should be and none when/where there shouldn't be.

First and foremost Happy Thanksgiving!

Did what Jac said and started checking voltages. Starter is getting 12v THE ENTIRE TIME the bike is running. That most certainly explains why the last one crapped out. Trying to check where exactly the issue is coming from (relay, starter switch, etc.) but sadly it's pouring rain here right now. I will put up some more info as soon as i get it. You have been a great help @JacRyann. Thank you!

What terminal did you measure? The main one should have 12v on it all the time. It's the solenoid terminal that should not, once the button is released.

Edit: this doesn't apply to a Ninja 250, which has only one terminal on the starter motor.

@ Triple Jim Measured the voltage from the post directly on the starter and the terminal on the solenoid. Both have 12v as soon as the bike starts.

Sorry, I was thinking of one of my other motorcycles. The 250 has only one terminal, and that should not have 12v on it unless you're actually cranking the engine to start it.

Starter button is shorted somehow. Verify that it's sending out +12v when key ON but not pressed. Most likely it's mechanically broken, spring's not working to disconnect contacts. Or contacts inside bent and switch is "pressed" all the time.
