Changed Lucy's oil for the first time. She got mobile 1 racing 4T 10W-40 an a fram filter (advised by Ram Jet).. The oil I drained was nice and clean no debris in the filter. I admit, I was scared to do her first oil change, praying I wouldn't find any abnormalities in the oil and filter. Happy camper. Anyone else ever buy a used bike outright and get a little anxious for the first oil change?

Hey good job! I'm always a little anxious with 1st-time jobs of any sort. Perhaps send oil-sample to lab for used-oil analysis so you get a baseline established? Then subsequent samples can be used to spot trends and set off alerts if something's moving in a bad direction.

I didn't know you could do that? I was just afraid I would pull that filter out and metal pieces would be stuck to the filter indicating very bad things going on. I had no reason to expect it that was just the pessimist in me. But everything looked beautiful. I emptied the oil into old oil bottles and took it to autozone to have it disposed of. How much does it cost to have oil analyzed and where would I send it? @JacRyann

Today I might be putting on my chin scoop I'm really liking the looks without it but gotta see what Lucy looks like with it. I think she's looking dead sexy. Just need the fender to be eliminated and I'll be happy although the fender is growing on me @Ram Jet aka Uncle Bill would advise me to keep it on.

Put a set of pirelli sport diablo rossi II's on the bike, it sticks like a MOFO. However i scraped the hell out of my front rim getting the tire on. Looks like complete garbage. time to gear it for wheelies soon and put a cage on it.... sacrifice it to the gods.

I like Blackstone Labs. Costs about $28 to get analysis done.

Really helped me with a Porsche Turbo I race about 80-hrs/year. Several samples in sequence pointed out trend in metals that showed my rod-bearings were wearing out. I was able to drop oil-pan and replace bearings before my next race. Bearing #2 was on verge of self-destruction and that would've cost me an entire engine!

This also indicated problem with oil I was using; not up to constant high-RPM high-temp tasks. I switched to a group-V synthetic that didn't have as bad viscosity breakdown under high-stress. Also upgraded to bigger oil-cooler and lowered my redline to 6750rpms.

All this from a little bottle of used oil!

I hope we aren't talking about a Ninja 250/300 here. That would be a very boring ride.

Rummaging through my garage found an unopened pack of blind spot mirrors. Checked them out before I stuck them on and they work great. Price checked these because I don't remember buying them. $4 at O'Reilly.

EDIT: LOL! just noticed the pic was upside down hahahaha.
Anyway definitely recommend throwing these on your bike they help a lot more than I expected. Plus they come in different colors so that's kind of the "cool" about it.

Orbital tank pad came in the mail and well I'll be expecting an exchange or refund. When I peeled it off it's backing some of the adhesive came off looked like complete ass. Was really looking forward to this. Didn't even put it on my bike.

I do like my new keychain though.

Coolant Temperature & Oil Pressure

Installed at temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge.

My bike runs at 172 degrees 60 M.P.H. 6,500 R.P.M (that's with a 193 degree thermostat). Oil pressure 36 lbs at same speed. Temperature 192 degrees at idle - no fan. Next project will be to install a manual switch on my cooling fan so I can control when the fan kicks in.

Where did you tap in for the oil pressure?

I bought a double banjo bolt and banjo fitting and married that with the O.E.M. banjo on the cylinder head. I tapped into the same line that the oil pressure light switch sending unit is mounted on. Then I modified the gauge cluster, dumped the O.E.M temperature gauge and installed my mechanical oil pressure gauge in it's place.

So did you ditch or hardwire the oil pressure light?

I didn't have to touch the oil pressure switch/light. The oil light still works in conjunction with the oil pressure gauge. Many professional auto race teams have an oil pressure warning light and pressure gauge.

It's basically a T-split, each device gets its own signal.

A "T" split. Huh. I'm an old guy, to me it's two devices attached to the same oil line. Like two cars traveling down the same road. OK "T" split - I'm hip.

Yeah, it's all equivalent. One of Bernoulli's equations about pressure being equal on all surfaces of a closed vessel. It shouldn't matter where you tap two banjos:

But since there's flow out of one leg of T, there may be some pressure-differentials between two banjos depending upon position. I'd think that pressure is high enough that it's not significant.

Someone racing AFM was saying that they saw oil-pressure drops at high-RPM/high-temperatures with most oils, then they found one that didn't have that effect. I'm going to install oil-pressure & temp gauges to monitor this...

Which is why doing something like this makes no sense to me. Doesn't change any pressures at brake-calipers, but adds weight and in some cases, binds up steering by having extra hoses rubbing on things.

This works just as well and identically:

Many factory bikes have manifold that splits front brake lines.

My installation is just like the first photo and doesn't interfere with the forks any more than the wiring for the tach.

I just don't understand the purpose. I guess for manufacturer and retailer, they just have to stock one hose instead of three different ones along with a splitter. Simplifies things and lowers cost.

Manual radiator fan switch

Installed a manual radiator fan switch. I didn't think my fan worked. It does. Now I control if and when the fan kicks in.

Really cool UB. Love the install.
Didn't do much today. Tracked down a wire that's bad and took care of it. Then I rode rode rode after work. Last 4hrs I been on that bike. It's one of those perfect riding days and even when I parked her, I wasn't really ready. I'm sure you've all been there.

Looks like it is time to do a coolant flush, start getting set for that. Probably do that Friday. Truck goes to tint shop, Thursday, for front windows and banner.

Blocked-off Radiator

I cut a 2" x 8 3/4" piece of cardboard and blocked off a portion of my radiator. My running temperature went from 162 degrees to 188 degrees. I'm OK with that. I'll make a more permanent block off with a 1/8" thick piece of neoprene rubber. My bike is pulling 35 lbs. of oil pressure at 7K R.P.M. I hit 100 M.P.H. today running 15/42 gearing and 110 main jets at 12K R.P.M.. I have not shimmed the jet needles and doubt I will.

Happy day - you can tell by the bugs in my teeth.

Ordered some blue w/red adjusters brake and clutch levers from CHINA! Lol
Cleaned my chain and sprocket with WD-40, denture brushes I nabbed from work, and micro fiber cloths. Lubed up the chain with some Lucas chain lube.
Omg she was dirty down there. The person who had her before me had her serviced to the "T" but damn why does the chain always get the neglect? Chain looks brand new. Noticed some rust on it though. New chain time? Not much rust but a little. People don't understand how a 15min clean and lube of the chain can save you money. Plus it's kind of fun and relaxing especially with Hendrix and a doobie
Had the bike almost a month now and her little nooks and crannys are slowly getting all detailed. The typical stuff most people let go are the stuff I enjoy the most. I'm sure most here understand. Everyone here seems to be on top of maintaining the "little things". Just always leaves me scratching my head that the easiest things oil changes, chain cleaning etc., are always the most neglected. And they're some of the most important things you can do for your bike. Anyway, I have some riding to do today it's sunny and 80. And I have to work the weekend so today it's quality time. Can't wait for my shorty's to come in!

Happy day - you can tell by the bugs in my teeth.

Try this instead:

Instead of making the cooling system less effective to raise temperature, it uses a partial bypass and higher temperature thermostat to get the engine up to temp quicker and hold it there more uniformly than the factory system. It works year round.

Installed a TB3 05/07/17. By the way, anyone who is running their Ninja without one is a God damned goof. It's the best investment you can make for your bike. It should have been installed at the factory.

Added Galfer Steel Braided lines front and rear, gutted the stock headers and found a baffle that I am going to fabricate and slip into my AreaP head to cut some sound from the straight pipes.
