Bike won't start
i was out today and dropped my keys into my bike and a friend had to come and help me out. we unbolted the left side fairing without taking off the light. this was enough that i could finally see the key and reach in and get it. problem solved and i drove home. so now i'm home and the bike wont start at all. the lights go on when i turn the key but the starter does nothing.
could it be something i did? Posted via Mobile Device |

definitly sounds like someone forgot the kickstand or the bike wasn't in neutral when the kickstand was on

oh dang... lol
the only reason I'm admitting this is because the people on this site are sooo nice (i'd totally get slammed on the local forums lol) I've always parked my bikes in neutral... yesterday i rode with someone who told me that its a better idea to park in gear so there's no chance of it rolling or someone rolling it away, seemed like a great idea to me... so ummm i did that |

thanks... this will help others in the future IF they bother doing a search on why their bike doesn't start.
btw, I always park my bike in neutral, but that's in an enclosed garage and on level ground. |

Joy, We have all done that. In fact, I still do it on ocassion. When I started riding in 58, we had none of these "protect us from ourselves doo dads" One simply kicked the kickstarter, and we were off. I still (after 14 years of not riding) have trouble with electric starters and turn signals. This is my first bike so equipped.

Aside from parking in gear to keep it from rolling, I try to park with the front wheel going up hill if there is an incline. That way if it does roll, it will force the stand to stay deployed. If you park front wheel down hill then it could fold the stand and let the cycle fall.

This is the best mistake to make, since it didn't hurt you or the bike. When I did the MSF course a while back, there was a guy who was older, maybe ~60s. I think his kids paid for his course as a gift to get back into riding. Anyway, he wasn't a novice, but getting back into riding. Sure enough, despite prior warnings from the instructor, when the "start your engines" signal was waved at one point, the bike "jumped" on him. He had it in first gear and the clutch wasn't pulled in. It was more of an embarrassment than anything else, but still shows it can happen to anyone, at least on an older bike. It's nice to know that our Ninja is advanced enough to save us from ourselves sometimes.
FYI, another safety feature you may not have noticed, if you put the kick-stand down after stopping in first gear, the engine will shut down. |

By the way, the supposed security measure of putting it in 1st to prevent someone from "rolling it away" is silly. It isn't a car, everyone has access to the shift lever, so I don't think that idea holds any merit. However, the wheel lock does force a would-be thief to actually lift the bike onto a truck. For our light bikes, that isn't a huge deal, but certainly better than nothing.

It won't keep "someone" from rolling it away, but it will keep the bike itself from rolling away. Especially if you have to park even slightly downhill, putting it in first and letting the bike roll forward to take up all the driveline slack, means it isn't going any further on its own.

I just bought my bike yesterday and took my MSF last month! That was my first time on a bike ever. I promise that I'll do something much more stupid before the day is over! Plus, I live 5 minutes from Miller Motorsports Park and my city is FLOODED with other bikers for the AMA superbike races this weekend, so I'll get to embarrass myself in front of lots of experienced riders.
