Another ticking sound thread

Hey guys, new to the Kawasaki life and so far it’s been a ride.. so my girlfriend got her first bike (2001 ex250f) and we have slowly been bringing her to life. After a carb clean and oil change we got her to fire up for a few seconds but had to shut it off because of a loud ticking sound. I’ve tried to search for the problem but came up with many possible answers. Do you think it could be a bad CCT? I tried to clean it but the tensioner shaft does have some scratches so we ordered a new one.

The P/O stated the bike sat around 7 years so I’m wondering if this could have caused the timing chain to stretch?

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to Ninjette!

Nah, sitting around won't do anything to metal.

I take it you've already changed coolant and oil? Filled to upper line on site glass?

Get yourself workshop manual and perform following service:

-:valve-clearance adjustment, use 1/4" torque-wrench to tighen lock-nut
- cam-timing, make sure both cams are timed correctly (all marks line up properly)
- install new CCT while you're there.

After above procedures been performed according to manual, engine will be smooth and quiet.

Yeah we changed the oil and coolant, timing was ok but I have not had a chance for the valve check.. CCT should be here tomorrow so I plan on doing it then. Hope all goes well and I’ll update after I do it.

Thanks!!

Wow, that's pretty loud. CCT would be my first suspect. Hope swapping it out takes care of it.

I was messing with the bike before work and I noticed I can lift the cam chain up about 2-3mm off the intake cam which I am guessing is a good diagnosis for the CCT? I tried to back off the CCT bolts very slightly( bad I know )and let the tension out just to test it and it did not tension any better so I’m hoping it’s just that..

The speed at which the "tick" occurs tells you where the problem is located:

If the ticking sound = indicated engine RPM it's coming from the crankshaft

If the ticking sound = 1/2 indicated engine RPM it's coming from the valves

If the ticking sound = less than 1/2 indicated engine RPM it's coming from the cam chain (maybe being made by a couple of rigid/seized links that make a noise each time they bump up and over the bottom edge of the rear cam chain tensioning guide)

A cheap "mechanic's stethoscope" from Harbor Freight is a good tool for narrowing down both the frequency of the noise and the location of the noise.
