I love this time of year. Charging cams, transponders, lap timers, checking chains and the little thangs that make your time spent riding and in the paddock sooooo much easier.

It's about that time for this thread to get busy again.

VIR w/ CSS for level 1 and a coach position tryout. What a day!!!

30+ hands shaken, including ALL of the CSS staff and Dylan Code (Keith Code's son).

Highlights from the trip focusing on the people;
1. The Lodge staff @ VIR are 100% honest folk. 2 housekeepers walked into an empty room with $120 cash on the nightstand + wallet with CC's. It was still there when I came back to the room. I stopped what I was doing, found the 2 ladies, shook their hands and thanked them for letting me know that some of my personal belongings were left in the room.
2. There is an owl that helps guard the front gate at VIR, or.... he is stalking the gate worker. Either way, I thanked him for giving me some extra time to check out of the room over the garage without charging me an extra day. My day was extra busy without paying extra for it.
3. Lara (Rider Services @ CSS) - This lady is awesome!
  • I needed a lot of help finding people throughout the day. She was there.
  • I needed help checking out of the room when the office was closed. She was there.
  • We missed our call to go out on track. She was there.
  • When classroom time was starting. She was there.
  • When I was tied up with my checklist and in class and thirsty. She was there to get a water for me.
  • If someone was missing and needed to be found. She was there.
  • If you didn't need anything... she checked that you were happy anyway.

Full thread here.

Sorry I didn't get many pics, but my day was super, super busy. Up next is Mid-Ohio in just a few days. I got some great plans to ride and have a great time with friends.

Tis the season to ride and have sooooo much fun!!!!

Just got an email;

Quote:
Thanks Chris!
It's Drew...I had to take off before I could thank you for your help. Although I didn't ride the last session, the advice you gave both JBarx and I did help me drop 2 seconds as well in the 6th one. I was reviewing the data analytics in the Starlane software this morning and I can actually see where I saved the 2 seconds. I benefited most from the entrance to Thunder Valley using the black line as a turn-in marker. Much appreciated!
Here is the short story...

2 budding Intermediate riders ask me for some "tips" to get them solidly in Advanced but I was coaching the Novice classes/drills nearly all day. I literally spent just 45 seconds with them in the garage drawing on a track map, told them they should see a 2 second gain. Then they ride their next session, one of the riders comes back to find me holding their lap timer... guess what the difference was? Yep... spot on 2sec drop in time.

I love seeing people's reaction when they put in the work and see the results but... it's even better when they "feel it" and come back with a big grin from ear to ear. I really, really, really like being a coach.

Many hands shaken and new friends made at Mid-Ohio over the weekend.

/short stories from the field

I worked bike tech for 2 days as well. Here is how you don't wanna shake my hand....

You roll up to tech
I say hi, shake your hand, say welcome to Mid-O and ask if you're ready
I begin to tech your bike
I reach down and feel your pinch bolts
I can turn them by hand or your missing them
YOU FAIL but congratz! I just saved your life...

Keep your wheels on people! If not, I will look out for you.

So is this a good time to mention i lost one of the 2 on the left at some point and didn't notice until we took the wheels off to change the tires?

Edit/ I think i may be talking about different blots... I met the ones on the back of the rear swingarm....

I took this group pic back in 2013 at Mid-Ohio. I lost a friend today on a road just miles from my house. I rode with Shawn (rider far left) many times on street and track, curvy or straight didn't matter.

Every time my front wheel is in the air, I know it will be pointing at you.

RIP and godspeed brother.

Thanks ya'lls, this one hits literally close to home.

I am right behind Shawn (on honda) before heading out on track @ Putnam.
2nd pic is him in the winners circle and soon to get a pocket full of $$$. The guy sure could launch a bike, his trap time was always awesome.

Soooooo many hands shaken today and at some point, I stopped shaking hands and started givin' out hugs.

Let me tell ya'lls. **** gets really real when you toss a shovel full of dirt in a hole. Tell your family and friends you love them erry day.

In the spirit that I try to infect everyone with, I want this post to be fun. So... let's make it a game. I am in this pic, find me like where's waldo. lol And for bonus points, for those who have been to mid-ohio with me, there are 4 mid-ohio coaches in this photo. I will give ya'lls one point for each one found. Yes, finding me counts as one of the 4.

Been awhile since I updated this thread for it's intended purpose.

2 more days coaching at Mid-Ohio. What fun!!!! And to coach a twilight was soooo awesome! Sooo many fast riders. Sunday's twilight was fast with a few slower riders mixed in. I estimate the average lap time of the top group was 1:37's-1:42's. And for ya'lls reference, AMA Pro race pace is in the 1:30's-1:39's. Not to shabby for a track day lol.

The format of a twilight is non-stop 30 minute sessions, starting at 5-8:30pm, I and A group riders mixed and it's a workout for sure! As a coach, you have to be ready to lay down a hot lap on demand, even 25 minutes into the session. You just never know if that fast rider is just really fast, or riding over their head. So you gotta follow em to see ya know.

Anyway... meet a lot of cool riders and saw plenty of cool bikes. One of the coolest one was a fully superbike spec gsxr 600 racer. Built motor, TC, LC, QS and too many other goodies to list, the thing was a beast! Pulled on the stock 750's and held it's own against the liters. 30k of mods in a bike will do that though hahahahah, so save your pennies.

Also, day two was another novice coaching day. The day had an oddly high number of crashes for mid-o and at least one rider had to go to the hospital (collar bone, I assume ). Sadly, it was a friend of mine and a couple of other ninjette members. A lady assigned to another coach had crashed on her second lap of the first session. She was pretty shook, needed a reset and to change groups. The story was very similar to @snot's crash and even in the same turn on the track. Naturally, I opted to take her in my group and stuck with her the majority of the day. After 3 or 4 sessions, she was rollin' pretty good again, but most important... she was rollin' with confidence and left very happy. My other 3 riders assigned to me had a great day, had big smiles, stayed shinny side up, went fast and dropped about 30 seconds off their lap times throughout the day. Chalk up 4 more safer and satisfied riders that you might meet in your street travels.

And... a first!!! 2 other coaches asking little ole me for help. I was able to solidly help one of the coaches, the other not so much. His question made no sense to me. He ask... "every time I put a set of slicks on this bike, I get real bad head shake on corner exit. I don't have this problem on dots, it's only slicks." WTF?!?!?!?!

Finally, seeing old friends and meeting new ones was on the top of the list to get done. Sadly, I forgot my camera and didn't run the contour to get video. I am displeased in hindsight.

In the end it was a great couple of days and can't wait to do it again soon.

that issue of his could be tire pressure or not riding hard enough to keep heat in the slicks, they behave pretty differently to dot tires

We covered tire pressures and such but I know the guy is fast enough to keep heat in them. I haven't seen him ride though so heat/compound could be a valid answer.

It's different depending on tires, but a good "general" starting point is 30/30.

Naw, I took this pic on the way to Mid-Ohio. My fingers are all jammed up due to taekwondo class, but it was my first time to ride track slightly injured.

Was a fun past couple of days. Coached a semi fast twilight with lots of rubber on the track from the open wheeled cars, then the next day was a standard track day. At the end of the second day Mid-Ohio had a private track event, I was asked to stay and coach that as well. 9AM - 9PM of straight track time only missing one session, jeezzzz I am beat today! My hand hurt pretty good on the drive home. But a couple more firsts for me, to coach a group of baggers and to ride a brammo empulse.

Coaching the bagger riders was pretty standard but had to mod some things due to their bikes. One lady said "if I keep going, I am going to have to replace my center stand". Another gent was fearful to open it up on the back straight but I helped him get to 90mph. But he left with the biggest smile, so it's all good.

The empulse was a woot!!!! Instant and FULL torque no matter what your current speed or gear. I felt like I was in stealth mode. The only sound was from the chain and a slight whine of the motor. The front felt really, really heavy though. I wish I had more time on it to get a better feel.

Lowcel crashed pretty good and bummed up BOTH ankles. I hope he heals up fast because he has more free track days to run.

The other riders I helped all kept it shiny side up and left super happy as well. It was great to see old friends and to meet plenty of new faces that will be friends for a long time.

hopes lowcel heals up soon, breaking one can be walked around but both sucks. I guess he went feet first into a barrier or something to pull that off

I would love to get paid to ride on a track, to get paid to help people ride better would be just as amazing

also, *evil look* is dead on for that situation

Bruce got it on video. He was cooking and hit the dip out of the carousel.

Link to original page on YouTube.

We txted about it briefly, rotten luck but he knows why. Gotta be back on the gas before hitting the bump.

Speed + weight in the front from slight roll off + light rear from slight roll off + lean + bump = sliding rear wheel. Unless your already back to the gas when the tire regains full traction... well... it becomes highside material.

Any time to come up to southern NJ? Chris, Julia, Darshan, and Dan respectively 609-558-1649 we ride at NJMP one of the greatest tracks for big bikes in the US. Thunderbolt modified course (chicane instead of 2-3). If you wanna carry some speed, this is the course to do it - wheelie 4 is a wheelie even for a 250 if you're moving and grooving.

I ride gsxr 600, the others ride duc 1199, BMW S1000RR but we always love having cool new guys out who are experienced show us some new stuff and enjoy beers and BBQ. We share a bolt-on 08 250R when our junk inevitably breaks.
