How do you lock up your gear/bike?

I am curious to see what you guys do with your gear.
I sometimes lock up my helmet to my bike at school only if I see some other bikes lock up their arais and shoeis but other than that just keep it in my hand. As for my jacket, I just wear it or carry it on my arm (gets annoying because it weighs like 20 pounds)

I live in apartments and do not really have any sense of security with my bike, it is just out in the open (but with a cover on it so it does not attract any eyes). I would like to lock up my bike at night to a pole but what other suggestions do you guys have for me? (For example, lock up the front tire to the pole or rather the rear, or lock up the front and rear together.)

Also, what type of lock should i buy?

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

My Tyke stays in storage so that I cannot help you with (Though when she does do over nights at my place I lock her to my car.)

There is a similiar thread already but I don't recall which folder its in.

As for when I am out and abouts... I take it all with me. Unless I am traveling with my HD/beemer friends who just happen to have extra storage in their saddlebags.. Then I put it there. But otherwise it stays in my sight.

One reason aside from the theft thing is... I cannot see who is near my helmet or of something drops on it etc... This way I know it hasn't been dropped cause I have a good grip on it.

I have your same exact reasoning.

i would be afraid to leave my helmet on the bike if i couldn't keep an eye on it. who knows, some punk might walk by and spit in the helmet or something.

i either carry my helmet, or if i have my backpack, i will stick it in the helmet compartment.

I have a thin cable combo lock I can use sometimes to run through my jacket sleeves and helmet if I am doing a quicky and dont want to take my gear with me, just rest them on the tank locked through the handlebars.

That's what I do every day here in Arizona when I go to school. Also leave the helmet on the bike. Have never had a problem.

At night, My locked heated garage. during the day I hook my helmet to a clip under the seat and make sure my full coverage insurance is paid up.

The bike stays stored in the garage at night and then while I'm at my destination I take everything with me.

I have a garage at home so it stays there during the night and when I am not riding and at home. When I ride to work or go somewhere I have Xena disc lock. This doesn't mean my bike is completely safe but it just serves as simple deterrent to lazy thieves so they might decide to seek a easier target instead. The bike can still be picked up and thrown in the back of van so it will never be completely be safe on the streets.

As for chain locks well I think they are really worthless IMHO. A good thief will cut through the thickest chain lock in just under a minute. In fact there is no chain that cannot be cut and if you don't believe me go ask a firemen. The best overall insurance against theft is a good insurance policy. I also never leave my helmet on my bike. In California you cannot ride without a helmet (Well you can but you will get a ticket for it and be told to park it.)so if my helmet is stolen off my bike then I am screwed.

If I'm out, depending on the neighbourhood, I might leave the helmet on the bike. Otherwise, it makes a great shopping basket

Helmet as a shopping basket, good idea. Use the straps as little handles too!

lol it's perfect for us guys because we're usually in and out. For women... it might be hard to window shop and fit in a pair of shoes/purses
