Need assistance / help
I will try to make the long story short. I have a 2009 black ninja 250. less than 5,000 miles on her. yesterday i took her to school roughly 25 miles round trip. started up perfect and ran smoothly. Today i took her to the gym and same thing again started smooth and ran great. i left it the sun for about an hour (if the sun has anything to do with it) went back out and started her up and let her idle for about 5 min since i was on the phone. I preceded to ride the bike to the end of the road and at the stop sign my rpms kept getting lower and lower until it just stalled. so i thought okay, not a big issue. i started it up again and road down the road. seemed fine to me. about a mile down the road it stalled while i was riding. i pulled over and attempted to start it from there with and without choke but no luck. i sat there for a few minutes and let it cool down and tried again, still no luck. any suggestions?
two days before the bike did sit for about a week, if that has anything to do with it. -Thanks |

Does your Ninja whine or whistle? Sometimes the tank vent valve can get overwhelmed and not vent fast enough causing a vacuum in the tank (especially sitting in direct sunlight). Crack the gas cap and see if it starts. Something similar happen to me except I was moving at high speed when the bike died.

You may have to pull the left fairing off and turn the tank petcock to PRI for a few seconds. This will allow fuel to flow to the carb without use of the engines vacuum. Then try to restart.

I had the same problem. I found a piece of gunk blocking the vent line from the tank (left side) and took an air hose to the line itself and have not had a reoccurance.

I can't seem to fd the petcock. I am familiar with what they look like and I have the left fairing off. Any ideas?

This has happened to many of us, usually THOUSANDS of miles apart, which is probably why it hasn't happened to Sean again. We have threads on it already.
This is the usual sequence of events: Bike is fully warmed up Tank cooling event (parking the bike ~15 minutes, encounter rain or sudden cold pocket, etc) Ride hard due to the engine being already warm Engine begins running poorly within a block or two until it dies Doesn't start again for several minutes; usually after you've checked all fluids and opened the tank It seems to be when the tank develops a vacuum due to cooling. It has happened to me several times in 20,000 miles and the only time it wasn't after a short cool down was when I encountered cold/rain. |

Areifel, I am glad that you figured out the issue and now everything is kosher. Being a proud new fifty owner I have been reading my manual religiously and I remember it saying to NOT let your motorcycle idle for more than five minutes, as overheating and engine damage may occur. Obviously this wasn't your issue, as everything is fine now, but when you said you just left it idling while you were on the phone, this is what I was thinking might have been the issue.
In my manual the NOTICE about this is on page 48. |
