Learning from the IOM TT

So it's TT week and thankfully, Velocity is once again covering it.

Love those northern accents.

Anyway, aside from the sheer awesomeness of watching these guys blast down public roads at upwards of 180 mph, there are some things we can learn if we watch them with a student's mindset.

To wit: I didn't see anyone drag a knee. Not one rider. And the lap averages are on the order of 130 mph. Those who view knee dragging as some sort of mark of skill -- especially on the street -- are IMHO completely missing the point. These guys are absolutely balls-out and they actually look like they're riding conservatively.

You need a perfectly smooth surface or you're going to break your knee cap.

Not really, but the OP makes some good points. I easily get my knee down on the track, but have yet to come close to doing so on the street. There are places I'm pretty sure I could, but I like to leave myself that extra bit of cushion since the street can be so unpredictable (debris, animals, dumbasses....).

There are only a couple of lower speed corners on the IOM TT that would allow for knee dragging, and you'll see it once in a while, but most of the track is near WOT and just rolling on/off in strategic locations.

I'm hoping to go watch in the next couple years.

what to learn from iom tt?

how to race on IOMtt. not much else.

keep in mind the course is hard to master because it is so treacherous. on a normal race track, you blow a corner and you run off. you blow a corner on IOM and you run off the side of a mountain. people take 20 years before they are "masters" of the iom

How to ride fast on public roads, or a track with a less than ideal surface. The biggest thing has already been covered, how conservative they are a lot of the time. Watching on boards it feels like the IOM TT is more about the following the flow of the road ahead of time than it is normal short circuit techniques though there is definitely a large amount of overlap.

Still, racing conservatively, 241 riders died over those roads between 1907 and 2009.

I think they all end up in the pub one way or other but standing up is the best way.

The biggest difference IMO is not so much whether they drag knees or not
Some corners at the IOM TT they do in fact drag their knees

But I think the whole thing is more down to the fact that these are country roads.
Which are narrow compared to tracks & also the turns/radius themselves are not track like....
not to mention the obstacles littering the roadside
Compared to a real track the track would feel as wide as an airport runway.

So the track allows more setup before the corner & a higher
corner speed which demands the knee down to pull the bike thru at those speeds.

But I agree with you that the knee down is not a mark of any special skill in itself &
not speed dependent as we use to practice at low speeds doing figure 8's in a large empty parking lot.
