2008 250R: Between 5th & 6th gear
I cannot tell the difference between the 5th & 6th gear.
The Service Manual says there's a 6th gear: am I reading this wrong, is there really a 6th gear? What's your experience? (I'm a newbie to motorbike). |

Yes, there are really six. While riding in 5th at a steady speed, note the RPM reading on the tachometer. Then change to 6th at the same road speed and note the tachometer reading again. There should be a difference, assuming the transmission is working as it should.

The gearbox goes 1 - N - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 (most motorcycles are like this, with neutral in between 1st and 2nd). Press down for 1st, then it will go up 5 times to get to 6th.
Have you taken or planned any riding training yet?

Just can’t really feel the diff between 5 and 6. May be I should look at the tach the next time, as suggested. |

The difference from 5th to 6th isn't huge. Maintaining the same road speed, the revs will drop about ~10%.

Thanks! |

Since it’s percentage difference between gears, actual RPM change will vary as well. If you’re shifting at 5000rpms like my grandma, you won’t really notice change to 4500rpms. Rev out 5th to 13500rpms and you’ll definitely notice drop to 12000rpms after shifting to 6th.
