What experienced riders owe new and would-be riders

What experienced riders owe

not a bad read.

A guy gets on a motorcycle for the first time without any riding gear, not even a helmet, and rides 150 yards into oncoming traffic on a multi-lane highway.

Am I missing something here (as the article doesn't have a lot of details)?

I'll give someone advice if they ask for it, but I'm no preacher man.

Nope, that's pretty much what it says. A damn shame and its definitely the fault of whoever let him ride the bike assuming he didn't buy it and trailer it (don't remember that bit)

you can only make suggestions to adult riders, even teen riders it is up to them to take your advice and in my experience they are going to do what they want anyway.

Preach and show someone all day long"do it this way.. because this..." "never do this because that.." "practice doing it this way just in case..." If they can't foreseeably see any of the advice affecting them they will never take it to heart to follow it and most people just don't understand or comprehend the possibilities for serious injury.

Anytime I put people on a bike I encourage them to wear full gear even my dirt bikes. Most common thing they say "I don't need it, I'm just going up the road and back." I say "no one generally plans on crashing but it still happens, put on the gear!"

I lump riding a motorcycle in with other "high risk" activities such as skydiving, scuba, mountain climbing, etc. Maybe it's just me, but when I'm going to try doing something new, particularly if there appears to be an element of risk, I take a bit of time to do some research and figure out whether I need some training or courses.

I suspect that even if this guy had been consoled by friends and family to take motorcycle training, he would have ignored them and gotten himself into trouble anyhow.

I will not let anyone i care about get on a motorcycle without at least a helmet. Then i tell them skin graphing is not a myth. But no helmet no ride on my bikes.

I also selectively let people ride my bikes. I'm not going to let some inexperience rider on my bigger bike. I also won't let any new rider go into the streets with my ninja. I use a parking lot like everyone else.

I owe so here I go! Dirt bike and yard ride first. The bigger the yard the better.

Both my kids learned in the yard (8 acres of grass) then moved onto a trail in the woods learning to avoid obtacles (trees).

I recommend two things to every single person who asks.

1. Read Keith Code's twist of the wrist. It is a fun read, it will help you to understand your bike, how it works and hopefully how to stay out of on coming traffic.

2. Take the MSF course... if you are going to crash a bike, crash their bike. They don't care and you aren't scratching your buddies bike, or worse, your bike.

I've taught one person to ride, who was learning how to ride a bike for theater. This was a high school student and was going to be driving the bike on stage (yeah, that was fraught with 'is this a good idea' moments.

we pushed him around the parking lot on a Honda Rebel 250... learning how to balance. how to use the brakes, how to stop and put your foot down... and hour or so of that and it was time for the engine... He learned the clutch and what have you in another hour... Two weekends of that and he was able to drive on stage from off stage, will a passenger and park the bike...

I don't think he even drives now but it was a sense of accomplishment for 3 accomplished riders to teach a guy to drive in two weekends and then watch him drive on stage... We told his mom, once we taught him how to ride a bike, next would be swearing and whisky... she was not amused.

it was a production of "Little Shop of Horrors", he was the dentist, Orin Scrivello

Definitely both guys are at fault. The friend for putting him on a bike in that situation with no helmet and the rider for being dumb enough to do it.

I was confused as hell when I read that article too. Why wasn't he wearing a helmet especially since this is in CA??? I think it said he took a turn too wide.

Many similarly sad cases have been documented.

Riding well is an art, and as such, it needs to be learned, taught and mastered with infinite patience, respect and dignity for us and for everyone else.

"Everything is simpler than we can imagine, at the same time more complex and intertwined than can be comprehended..... If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming." - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

They fill up fast, but the MSF BRC here is funded by some grant, so it only costs $25. They supply the bike, so all you need is a DOT helmet, eye protection (sunglasses is enough), a long-sleeve shirt, and boots. Even if you have to go out and buy all that, it's probably still under $100. In addition to hopefully learning the basics of riding a bike and covering the skills portion of your license endorsement, it's a cheap way to at least get some idea if riding is your thing.

As others have said, people generally won't listen to advice until something makes them realize that it could be detrimental to not take the advice. Unfortunately, we tend to be stupid and stubborn, so it often takes something bad happening to us personally before we believe it could actually happen.

You should give good advice when you can, but it's impossible for you to make someone take your advice.
