The forks I did from Racetech I set up for 215lb naked rider weight(.80kg springs) with emulators. I probably will need to adjust it a little to even out the rear shock. We will see. |

I found the racetech website to be very useful to calculate approximate rear spring rates if you're curious what would work better.

Yea I used it but Racetech asked me all the questions when I had them completely do the forks for me. Their site says 9.419kg/mm for road racing. The stock spring is 9.3kg/mm. So the GSXR is rated the same right?
Right now the bike is stripped of a lot of weight so until I put everything back on, I'll set Sag from there and see. I think with my weight being 235-250lbs suited the shock will work good. |

Hey Steve, do you know if the 2008 GSXR 600 shock would work as well? Or does it have to be a 2006-2007 shock? Thanks in advance.

The info is all in post #186
http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showt...&postcount=186 You need 06-09 gsxr 600 shock and spring from 03-04 gsxr 1000 with collars/spacers. (or custom spring from racetech). You will also need Steve's linkages to compensate the height drop. Since i cannot use aftermarket linkages in my production race class, i ditched the gsxr shock for RPM 2-way shock [stock ride height] from Taiwan (sold by @samw - SportisiMotorSport). fyi - As several folks from India asked me about the 250 build, i asked PerformanceMotorcycleStore at Bombay to talk to Sportisi & RPM but they did not seem to be interested.

If you buy Racetech spring matched to your weight, you will not need the additional spacers/collars. If you re-use 03-04 gsxr 1000 spring, you will need it.
It is very easy to do. A change from Steve's method I did was, reuse the top eyelet from the stock shock as i did not like thinning the material on the gsxr shock. But, then disadvantage is, you damage your stock shock (no biggie - you can buy the OEM top eyelet for 11 bucks) Now, keep in mind, all this spring discussion is based on weight. I weigh 172lb now and gsxr 600 spring was too hard on me. I dont know your weight so you may be good with the stock spring (who knows). Most important, if you are planning on racing, do check with your local club if they allow modification to the linkages in their respective production class. This is a great mod at budget price if done right. Quote:

Hey @abhijitz Thanks for the valuable input. I weigh in at about 155-160lbs without gear, so I'm assuming it might go up to 170-175lbs with. I'm not likely to race the bike, my main aim is to get it as close to track ready and a super sports as possible. I've already bought the following for the same : -
1) Gold valve emulators. 2) Going to fab my own pre load adjusters. 3) SV650 clipons. The only things I need now are rearsets, GSXR shock and a new set of tyres... Will keep getting things as I have the money ready. Sometimes I wish I was in the US just so I could race my ninjette... lol |

Got the gixxer 600 shock installed today with a spring off of a 1000 using Rexbo's dog bones. I had to grind the swing arm quite a bit to make sure the spring cleared but I think it's good . Thanks to Rexbo for his input. Can't wait to see what difference it makes!

@pjed why did you have to grind the swingarm? From what other DIYs I've seen, no one has had to grind the swingarm...

Not sure what spring and dog bones people on other DIYs used. In my case, I think Rexbo's dog bones moved the bottom linkage and for sure the gixxer 1000 spring is wider. The spring actually touched in two places and I couldn't get enough clearance just by spinning it.

Hmmm, interesting note about the linkage movement. Rexbo did you have to do something similar with your links?

Something for the guys installing gsxr shocks... You can use a similar arrangement to this and still be legal, while maintaining stock height.

The shaft size on the 1000 shock is too large so it won't work with 600 shock so I'm thinking maybe the base off an 04-05 600 may work. The base looks the same as the 1000 but I don't know what the shaft size is.

@Rexbo, So Steve, The 156mm dog bones will raise the rear end up to stock height or higher with the GSXR shock? I need to know before I start hacking some ZZR600 links

Did a mockup with the gsxr shock. With the stock linkage and 1000 spring, it looks like it clears everything after doing numerous bounce tests. Even just bouncing the bike, The gsxr show really shows how bad the front needs work.
not quite sure how abhijitz reused the stock bolt sleeve on the gsxr shock unless he heated up the sleeve and melted it though to fit in the gsxr.

GSXR shock head was heated and the inner metal sleeve was pressed out. (same with the 250 stock shock) The rubber circumference turned rough. Then the metal inner sleeve from the 250 shock was pressed in. (Before pressing in, silicone was smeared on the rougher inner edge. The sleeve secured rock solid and thereby the thickness of the sleeve was not compromised.
[The complete Ninja 250 shock sleeve assembly can be purchased for 12 bucks]

Can we use a ZX6r shock instead of a GSXR shock? I'm getting an 08' ZX6r shock for pretty cheap...

@Rexbo i'm wondering if you can tell me the effective rear wheel travel with this setup? iirc stock shock with stock knuckle is ~130mm, same with the gsxr shock? i know rear wheel travel on the gsxr is 135ish depending on year but im not sure if it runs a different ratio on the shock knuckle or not... nobody lists the ratios of the shock knuckles

I've installed my gsxr600 shock with adjustable dog bones with an eye-eye length of 150mm any idea how much is it going to raise my bike's rear? How can I measure it and what's the stock height? Cheers!!! @Rexbo

Bumping because there's good info in this thread.
It's too bad that all through Ninjette there is no one definitive DIY for installing the gixxer shock. Scattered notes and whatnot are the best I can find.

Good info though and great site-very impressed on the level of ingenuity here. I’ve tried the GSXR shock and ran into the same issues others stated (lowered the rear ride height). I swapped back to stock shock and will be keeping up with the new ideas you guys are coming up with (diff spring combo, etc). Some of you need to get paid for all of this R&D work! Lol |

Its pretty straightforward:
1) Buy a 05-06 GSXR600 shock (resevoir fits) 2) Drill out the upper and lower eyes with a 12mm drill or 15/32" bit 3) Swap the spring with the spring from a 600/750/1000, whichever is closest to correct spring rate per the racetech calculator. 4) Buy my dogbones to lift the back of the bike way up high, and set sag. 5) Win. |
