Arrow 2004 ninja 250 overheating

Hey guys And. Gals I’m new to bikes.

I have a couple issues with the bike. I’ve cleaned the carbs and set the float height. If the bike is setting straight it idles around 1400rpm if I sit it on the kickstand tilted the bike idles around 1600-1700 rpm. I let it idle on the kickstand for about 10-15 mins and it started to overheat and water boiled out of the reservoir.

Are these bikes know to overheat at idlefor long periods? I’m going to test the thermostat and radiator cap tonight.

Thanks

Did the electric fan come on? If not, that's probably your problem.

If you're ever messing with an air cooled motocycle engine, don't leave it running that long or you can damage it.

Yes, I'm aware that the Ninja 250s are liquid cooled.

Checking the thermostat, as you suggested, is a good next step. Where is Rva? If it was really really hot when this happened, it could be related, but normally the fan can prevent overheating of an idling Ninja 250.

I’m in Virginia. I’m a total newb. I was letting it idle in the garage and temps were around 50 degrees. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn’t cut off. I have had it die on me a couple times. But I raised the idle a bit and it helped.

Right, they made it easy to adjust the idle speed, even while sitting at a traffic light. I have to think they expected that riders would want to do that more than with most bikes.

I noticed when cold, my idle would vary as I moved bike around in garage and back out to street. I suspect it's fuel in float sloshing around.

Here's a question that occurred to me while I was putting a post on your other current forum thread.

The setup:
I was wondering about the odd idle increase condition you described in the original post on this thread. While I have never heard of an EX250's carbs reacting to being leaned over on the side stand, I have heard of EX250s having idle-up issues when the handlebars are turned all the way to one direction due to an over-tight throttle cable.

The question:
Is it possible that you're turning the handlebars all the way to one side when you put the bike on its side stand?

Just a thought (because in this scenario the bike is running only on the idle fuel circuit of its Keihin carbs and that fuel pathway really shouldn't be or maybe even can't be affected by the few degrees of tilt that the sidestand induces).

It would be interesting to get an opinion on this theory from Gordon, @ducatiman, our resident expert on the EX250's Keihin CVK30 carbs.
