Onboard Iphone charger
Just ordered one of these.
Looks like exactly what we need to power the iPhone on board. Haven't seen anything else like this one yet anywhere. Will report how it works out. It seems to have plugs for easy removal, a fuse to protect the phone and a power smoothing circuit. Also a little clip to clip the wire to your brake cables or whatever if you mount your iPhone in a RAM cradle mount like I do. (BTW this combination takes amazing videos while recording your GPS routes! For which you'll drain so much juice you'll want this onboard charger) http://www.powerletproducts.com/prod...ry-harness/421 They even take paypal.

Hrm looks a lot simpler than what my friend suggested which is hooking up a cigarette lighter and a car charger. Much more expensive though...

Well so far the company gets an "A+" for shipping time.
I think I ordered it last weekend direct from the company site. 7 days or less. Major bonus now days. Now to wire it to the bike and test it. Lets hope it really does last a lifetime. The charger that came with my iPhone stock broke the first week just plugging it in to the wall. I actually bought a cigarette lighter and car iPhone charger before buying this but wasn't able to find a place I was happy putting the cigarette lighter/accessory socket.

ace_at_mind's Semi-DIY: 12VDC Socket Install. With the fuse and everythinng, it's pretty much the same thing as making your own without buying the part above except that you will have a waterproof 12v DC auto socket for other things and you can be more selective about iPhone charging.
When I did it I figured that the "Made for iPod"/"Works with iPhone" products would be more likely to include a real VRM as opposed to just stepping down from 12v. I also knew that the wall plug outputs 1A/1000mA instead of the typical USB standard of 0.5A/500mA, so I specifically hunted for one with a "FastCharge" or "QuickCharge" port. I found the Belkin Charge Duo at Wal-Mart, The Apple Store, and Frys (can no longer find it at Wal-Mart). It has two USB ports, one is 1A and the other is 0.5A. It includes mini USB, iPod/iPhone USB charge/sync cable, and is MFI/WWI-certified. The ideal mount point is in the semi-DIY. |

I actually looked at that mounting point several times but it is not the best for the socket I have. It's really the only place on the entire bike to mount a socket unless you have your air box removed too.
I may have to chase down another socket or make a new mounting bracket. Either way, I hacked up this iphone cable and split it into my harness and shortened the cables so I don't have to tap off the battery terminals. Looks really clean. Also added the last wire to my harness for the shift displays when they arrive. Will get some pics up soon.

OK here goes.
You guys know I can't leave good enough alone right? So I hacked the phone charger into the bike's harness. Here's pics. First up, shrink tube what the factory "forgot" to do. Next, kick your orange juice over on your electronic shifter project you have been working on for weeks/months. Then, since I hacked it into the harness I shortened the main battery side cable up some. (orange shrink tubing hiding splices) This pic shows the cable shortened already really. Then I added more shrink tubing to cover the splice tubing and prevent any rubbing or whatevers. The black wire (ground) went to the bike's bolt that attaches to the frame (As shown). The small inline fuse got taped into the "switched" power wire right off the plug of the harness. I have like 5 things running off of my switched hot line. lol I also added a wire spliced from my neutral sensor wire in the harness and ran it up to my shift gauge plug for later use so I don't have to hack my harness again for a while. Not so bad ey? Tape it back up and make sure all your fuses is good. If you're like me you probably have a few chillen here about now. I can fit my hand down into the fairings between the fork now and reach the plug. If I wanted, I can now probably run a 12v socket off this plug too? Plugged in the cable for the iPhone Tested working See it! I can cover it with a vacuum cap if it rains. Now to shorten the cable from the plug to the iPhone that you can remove if you'd like. We don't need no stinkin' coils. Than I ran the shortened wire from the plug through the bike's wire routing thing along with the clutch cable and other wires up to the iPhone. A little bit of heat with a lighter will let you shape the cable how you want it.

I should add..
I did 300 miles today. Half freeway and half GMR twisty runs. The charger still works.

USB Power from Battery Tender
I got a product from Amazon that connects directly to the Battery Tender and it's a little cheaper and much smaller than the Powerlet option (no cables to deal with and fits in my pocket). Great to go from bike-to-bike with.
Here's the link... http://www.amazon.com/SAE-2-Pin-USB-...6529162&sr=8-1 And a picture from the website... |

Why are you asking us to feel you?!
Anyway, @Snake's "not so good terms" wording makes it sound like we forced him out, but that's not it at all. He had a falling-out with some real-world friends who still post here and he got a different bike to focus his attention on, so he left on his own after an argument with them about street vs. track riding. Casey's a good guy who helped me numerous times, so I was sorry to see him go. |

Waaaah 54 dollars for that?! That's incredulous! I wired up a cigarette lighter USB charger into the lights from the dash for free... Then use my USB cables beyond that!
The SAE to USB adapter is very neat too! |

I worry about those things that run directly off the battery. It's better to have a relay installed so the wires are only hot when the bike is on.

There isn't one. You'd have to buy a battery tender and install the wiring for it.

You could, but then you put a strain on the wiring that is already supplying power to a part. You could end up blowing a fuse.
