Question Purchasing a Brand New Ninja 250R

I went to a dealer and was quoted these OTD prices:

2012 SE $5200 OTD ($4200 base) MSRP $4449
2011 $4700 OTD ($3700 base) MSRP $3999

Fees are $630 (freight, handling, doc) + tax (6% in MI) + $45 (plate and title)

Why do I feel as if this is not a good deal. They always try to make it seem like they are doing you a favor by saying there is barely any markup on bikes and I can take a few hundred off.

Garbage.

Somebody help me out. Trying to get a bike purchased within a week.

I'd really rather get a 2011 as nothing but the color schemes have changed, but man, can they give me a better price from the MSRP of $3999.

Prices really depend on where you live in the country. In Oklahoma, I can get a 2012 special edition for $4600 using a -200 military discount. Elsewhere, like Cali, people would kill their brother for that deal.

See that's just the issue.

$4800 for a 2012 and $4700 in MI for a 2011, something is wrong.

LOL!!

I guess my only option is to call every dealership close by and compare prices.

BTW those prices didn't even include a "FREE" helmet.

"FREE" LOL!!!!

If they have a leftover 2011, I would offer them (walk in with cash or a check already written for the amount) the $4,000 msrp (or a little under), plus whatever taxes and DMV stuff actually comes to in your state. Nothing hurts a sales manager more than seeing cash walk out the door.

Here in PA, I went to two dealers..first said a 2012 base would cost 5300. Second gave it to me for a tad over 5000, and they said up front they don't negotiate at all.

You feel like thats a bad deal because it is; like all brand new 250s. There's really very little reason to buy new. Buy used from someone who took care of their bike, or at least didn't murder it.

Buy used!! I got a used bike in perfect condition with 6300 miles for $1600. Don't waste money on dealer fees and depreciation. That's all you're doing on a vehicle that only costs $3999 when you buy it new.

I would definitely look at buying a used bike, specifically from a private seller, as they would be more likely to negotiate. From a dealer's perspective...the demand on the ninja 250s is very high, especially now that it's getting into the summer & gas price averages are high. So, whatever they say the best they can do...is probably the best they can do.

I was negotiating with a dealer over a used 250, and we were like $100 off from making a deal (was paying cash, btw), and I walked out expecting they'd call a couple days later saying they talked to the manager and was able to meet my price. Went back in there a couple days later and half of their 250s, including the one we were negotiating were sold

I really think it depends on what you want the bike for, and what your mindset is like. The reason I bought new is because I don't like to deal with trying to figure out what I'm getting used, condition, etc and because I live alone and know no one around here. I paid for the "convenience" if you want to call it that. Also, the second biggest reason was because I know that I want to keep this bike til the wheels fall off (or god forbid, gets totaled), so I don't care about resale value and depreciation. If you are like me, buying new makes sense.

But if you buy knowing you're going to unload the bike and upgrade once you've learned how to ride, then I guess used is the way to go. =D

Except that you know its never been touched by anyone else, has never been down and has never been improperly cared for. Besides you can just total it and get all your money back 8 months later

I had a used 2009 and sold it.

I wanted to buy a new one so I did what I could.

I called all the dealers within reasonable distance from me and got quotes.

No 2011s were at any of the dealers so I took my best quote for a 2012 and told my local dealer to not only match it but BEAT it.

They did just that!

I will be picking it up tomorrow as the bike wasn't "PREPPED" to leave yet.

So my advice to anyone buying new, from my experience the best price I got was from a small dealer who only had one of each color.

Then I took that price and had my dealer beat it. So no worries about driving miles away for a pickup!

Well that's all fine a dandy when you can find a decent bike.

I looked for months, this was my best option.

Plus, when you have good negotiating skills, doesn't matter too much.

Also I don't plan on selling my bike so I'm good to go.
