Help with new bike revving very high

Hi folks.

Very new Ninja owner (I just purchased a 2012 model 250R Ninja with around 1500 miles. Everything is stock, from what I can tell).

I went on the interstate yesterday, however, and noticed that in sixth gear, the engine RPMs at 80mph is nearly twelve thousand (12,000)!

Is that normal?? Seems very high.

I checked with speed calculators and they say that the RPM at 80 should be closer to 10k.

12k seems too high (since the redline is 13k). I'm planning to use this bike for 400-500 mile trips at 80mph, and I'm concerned about damaging it at 12k for hours and hours.

I'm pretty sure that the previous owner (who didn't mention anything about changing sprockets) did not modify the stock 14/45 sprockets (but I haven't personally verified that yet). Everything else is stock/regular settings, I believe (tires and forks are stock, tires are at proper pressure, etc, etc.).

I also don't know if the speedometer and tachometer are accurate, but I didn't have any other reason to think they weren't reading correctly.

Should I be concerned? Is it physically possible for a stock Ninja to be at 12k at 80mph with standard sprockets? Does this mean that the tachometer is definitely reading incorrectly?

It's not possible for your ninjette to be at that high rpm at that speed given it's standard sprokets etc.

Unless yo're getting very bizzare precise clutch slipping

That is what I am getting with my 2012, I changed to a 15t front sprocket and now I am around 11k on my tach. I have taken bike into dealer, they switched out the tach, but this did not fix it. On colder morning the tach shows normal for first part of ride, but goes up about 1k in rpm after bike gets hot. It is probably a bad CDi, but I have not taken back to dealer to have this swapped out yet. Your tach might be showing 12k, but that is not the actual engine rpm's, it is an error caused by faulty CDI most likely. There are a ton of threads about this issue.

Thanks for the reply. The clutch seems totally fine. When it is disengaged, the engine spins freely, and when it is engaged, the engine seems to be fully engaged with the motor.

Save us all the hassle of internet troubleshooting and go have a look at your sprockets, once you know what you're gearing is we'll be able to better diagnose the reason.

Get a 15 tooth front.
It'll lower your rpm by 7%.

Then you have to get a new rear sprocket.
Im pretty sure you have a 60tooth

Could be your sprockets or maybe you got that tach problem with the CDI or whatever it was. When the bike gets hotter it starts indicating higher RPMs for some reason. I don't think Kawi ever did recognize it. I'm starting to see it again now that the temperatures are rising.
