300cc Supersport Class being added to World Superbike

Yes, it's real. A world championship level 300cc production based class:

https://motomatters.com/news/2016/09..._worldsbk.html

This is good news for small bike racing. It will help grow the classes at the club level and create a bigger performance base for these smaller bikes. The class structure could easily be applied to club racing so that we'd be able to race the same spec bikes that they do at the world level.

The interesting part will be how the rules translate into actual performance on the track since you'll have everything from 298cc to 471cc together in the same class.

I'm just guessing that the KTM and R3 will be the class leaders with the Ninja close behind and the Honda trailing despite its cc advantage.

I just hope it doesn't cause the price of the bikes to skyrocket.

This is my concern as well. This is going to lead to chassis development (currently the RC390 has the best chassis and is the bike I'd want to run)

most of the racers out here have had to do a lot of work on suspension($$$ shocks and springs), but once they found the right set up the bike was amazing.

Thanks for the rule book. It was an easy read as most of says the part needs to be as homolugated and unmodified.

The weights are interesting:
150kg for the Honda, 140kg for the R3 and Ninja, and 136kg for the KTM

The most race ready bike gets the lightest weight.

The RPM limit:
10,500 for the KTM & Honda, 13,000 for the R3 and Ninja.

Again, it will be interesting to see how these limits shake out come race time.

I have some resources to get a really good setup going with that bike, just don't have the $$$ or the reason to get on one since I'm too old for the RC Cup. Amazing bike though for what it is

Seeing as how I've only just warmed up some tires running my pregen race bike around a kart track, I also won't be joining in on any of that fun soon.

I do wonder if MotoAmerica will be adding this class as well or will the KTM Cup class preclude the SS300?

I really don't think that will be an issue. There could easily be two bike models from each manufacturer. One standard model and one special edition model that is more than just BNG (Bold New Graphics). It would have things like better suspension and other higher spec components. Pick how much you're willing to pay. And as this class of streetbikes become more popular manufacturers may very well be willing to lower the prices while making up the profit on higher sales volumes.

I believe this is very good for small displacement motorcycle racing in general because it will make the buy-in to start racing much more doable.

I hope this drives development of the lightweight bikes specifically better frames and suspension. Although I wouldn't be upset if somebody made a 350cc inline 4.

There is also a new CBR250RR that's on the horizon. The 250 is intended for Asian markets, and possibly a bigger engine (300 or 350) for the U.S.

It's a twin like the Ninja and R3, and has USD forks and a steel trellis frame (like the regular CBR250R). Much better than the normal CBR250R (single) but nothing like the 250RR 4 cyls from back in the day.

Looks trick though -

There are a few YouTube videos out there of pre-production models in action.

EDIT - Or it may not come to North America - http://canadamotoguide.com/2016/07/2...north-america/

I think it will definitely drive the development of better small bikes. It will definitely move the advancements to them quicker than we would normally see it, since the bikes need to be homogulated and kept pretty much stock. Since the rule book keeps the power to weight ratios the same, changing suspension and frame is the best way to improve the bikes.

Unfortunately I think it will also drive the price up.

If prices do start to go up, I hope this is the route manufacturers take. Similar to the way Kawasaki does the Ninja 650 and the ZX6R. or the Ninja 1000 and the ZX-10. Maybe they will have a Ninja 300 and a ZX-3R.

So all this talk about better frames and suspension for the 300cc class bikes has me seriously thinking about redoing my project bike (FZR400 chassis/XR650R) motor. I'm going to ditch the XR650R motor and put in either a 300 Ninja motor or an R3 motor. That should make a decent spec "World Supersport" platform

I love the rules of this class, particularly the spending limits and list of accepted bikes, and some effort put in to making differing bikes perform similarly on track. CCS could learn a few things about how to set up a race class. CCS Ultralight classes are pretty much a pile of **** right now, some bikes allowed here, some allowed there and no spending limits.

Don't forget Ducati's method, not just sport and supersport like Kawi, but Supersport and special supersport.

They have the Panigale, then they have the Panigale R with all the fancy Titanium fractured rods and fun suspension bits and moar amazingballz-ier brakes, etc etc. All so it can be considered a production bike for the homologation rules.

Just a thought, but maybe this is why Honda revealed the CBR250RR when they did?? They have the standard baby cibber for the cheap public, then the RR version to be race legal and give them a leg up. idk. I'm completely talking out my rearward orifice right now, but it's something.

Kawasaki kind of did that with the Ninja 1000, ZX-10R, H2, and H2R

Kinda?

H2 vs H2R: the R is really just a different ECU and tire set and exhaust, no?

N1000 vs ZX10R That might be right, but not to the same extent. Panigale is the lower spec and is Duc's superbike. ZX10R is the up-spec and is Kawi's superbike. Panigale R goes further than that with different engine internals.

This is largely a case of syntax, but I don't really see it as the same method. All manufacturers sneak stuff into special (more expensive) models for the sake of Homologation.

Keep in mind that any super-trick, wiz-bang, production racer model that proves to be the hot ticket will be restricted in some way to bring it back down to the same level as the others.

NHRA Pro Stock drag racing has a similar formula. Once something starts to dominate there are changes made (RPM limits, added weight) to level the playing field.

It's not like the good old days where one bike could completely dominate the others until the other manufactures stepped it up.

Now days they take the top machine and dumb it down.

The Ninja 1000's base engine design came from the ZX9 and isn't as zippy as a 10R's engine.

Hopefully a sign that the class is drawing attention to small-displacement production-based race bikes.

Lots of R3s and Ninjas, no KTMs. I would have thought there'd be more of them in the series.
