[American Motorcyclist Association] - Vintage motorcycle clubs combine great bikes, g

One of the best aspects of getting involved with vintage motorcycles is sharing your passion with friends. And another benefit is finding new friends who already share your interests.

Sean Carrigan, president of the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club in Lexington, Ky., said his group has drawn more than 3,900 enthusiasts from across the country. If this weekend’s AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days matches previous years, the club’s ranks will exceed 4,000 by Sunday night.

“We always add new members at this event because there are so many fans here already,” Carrigan said. “AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days gives our club members a chance to get together in one place, show their bikes and just hang out.”

The VJMC tent at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this year features several rare bikes. Carrigan was hesitant to single out a prime example, but when pressed, he pointed to a 1965 Honda CL72 Street Scrambler.

“That’s a 250, which is very rare,” he said. “You see a lot of the 160s and the 305s. This one won at our nationals last year.”

Over at the Classic British Motorcycle Club of Cincinnati tent, member Steve Bilbrey is displaying his 1957 BSA Ally Clipper.

“It’s a fairly original bike,” he said. “I’m a sucker for four-stroke singles.”

Bilbrey said he bought the 500cc BSA at the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days swap meet last year.

“It was built as a low-cost alternative to the Gold Star,” he said. “It’s the last of the long stroke big singles for BSA.”

Club president Steve Morris said his group enjoys AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days every year, because “it’s just a good time.”

“We spend money we don’t have buying stuff we don’t need and stuff we didn’t know we needed,” Morris said. “It’s just great that people keep this kind of thing alive.

“You know, it’s not even so much about the bikes as it is about the friends you make,” he explained. “We get together on Saturdays at the garage. It’s just a great group. And, even if the bikes someday are gone, we will still have our friends.”
