Tach intermittently works.
Bought a 2010 250 with 25k miles on it. Both the tach and speedo intermittently work, which is weird since the speedo is mechanical and the tach is an electronic signal.
Went over the wiring diagram to see if there was anything obvious that'd cause it, but everything seems good. Best I can figure is it's the cluster itself going out. Anyone else had this happen or think of anything to check? |

Check grounds on dash. There's a screw on back of cluster that's supposed to connect through harness to chassis-ground.

Perhaps measure resistance to chassis ground from various points on cluster. Open up cluster and measure from individual grounds on each gauge? Also measure voltage going to each gauge.
Could be frayed broken wire somewhere between chassis-ground and gauges. Also power wires. |

Yeah I did a quick once over a while back, seemed good. Just opened it all up again, getting good signals from all the wiring.
I think the cluster is just ****ed. Tried cleaning the speedo cable and speed sensor on the wheel, then tried spinning it with a drill, nothing. Then I realized the cable and speed sensor are definitely working, because I'd reset the Trip and it had all the miles I'd put on it since then, so the speedo in the cluster is just ****ed. I'm just going to buy a used cluster and see if that helps, the speedo should work at least lol. |

I replaced everything having to do with the speedometer, and it doesn't work still. It's completely mechanical, and everything engages and spins, so IDK wtf is going on at this point.

I would think your problem is with the speedometer drive on the front wheel.
Try putting your bike on the service stand and spin the front wheel and see if the speedometer registers.

No I replaced literally everything. The front wheel speedo sensor, the cable, and the entire cluster. I've taken it apart and put it all back together 3 times in the last 2 days.

Yep. It's on perfectly fine. The Trip and ODO still count up too, so it's definitely not the front wheel speedo sensor. I used to race these, I've taken the front wheel on and off Ninja 250s countless times.
After ****ing with the old cluster's speedo, I think it's the Needle itself. Seems after so many miles it might be getting gunked up, and it apparently doesn't take must for it to not be able to move. |
