Oil filter tightness
Hi,
Thanks for letting me join the forum. I just bought a 2010 Ninja 250 and I did my oil filter change today. The washer on the spring was missing so I had to use something else until next oil filter when I will buy one. The question is that I bought a Wix filter. But it is not that tight on the filter bolt. I think that in some videos I see it being inserted with a bit of force. But this one seems a bit easy to slide on the bolt. I am afraid that if there is a little gap between the rubber hole on the filter and the bolt the filtering action will be compromised since oil might pass between. What are your thoughts? Thanks |

Shouldn't matter. It's vertical sealing between O-ring at top & bottom of filter that separates before & after sides of filter.

Thank you. So the sealing at the top should be on the metal cup. But at the bottom there is the spring, which does not seal. There is most probably something that I don't get. The washers that I used is much narrower than the original. Is that washer there nonly to avoid the rubber on the filter being damaged by the spring?

Yes, washer is critical. It applies even pressure on rubber and squeezes it. This causes rubber to expand in all directions. Including inwards to seal against inner tube/bolt. I suspect spring without washer would serve similar function, but may not deform seal uniformly all around. Probably more than enough to seal though. I've left that washer off several times by accident. Bike's still running fine after 5-yrs of track usage.
