Riding pants.
I use my bike a lot to commute to work so I am wondering if I should buy some riding pants that fit over my work pants or just get regular riding pants and change out of them once I get their. Right now I have a pair of padded denim riding pants.

My mesh riding pants can go both ways. I usually wear them by themselves but other pants/shorts can fit underneath if I'm going to work or something. I like the option of wearing my work clothes under my pants. It makes gearing up and gearing off much easier, imo.

I have a pair that fit over my regular pants. There is a no jean policy where I work and I like the option of either wearing pants under the riding pants or not, depends if I running late or how hot it is. The only draw back is sometimes the pants get a little wrinkled, mostly when its hot out. Also keeps me dry when it rains.

For commuting I dont use riding pants, the pants I wear to work are reenforced so they will hold up in a slide. I have a pair of hell and back textile pants I use for dedicated riding or when I am going to run errands and want t ride aggressive.

I recommend riding pants that can be worn over your work pants. The Joe Rocket Ballistic pants are actually very well suited for this purpose. They come in a crap load of sizes that accomodate both waist AND height as well!

I commute to work with full leather overpants and just slide them off when I get to my desk. It takes me about a minute to take off all of my gear and about 2 to put it all back on, so it's really not too inconvenient that way. And since I do it at my desk, no one can complain that I'm late because I'm still changing in the bathroom or something (I don't know how too the minute they are at your job, but it's something to consider if your boss is anal retentive about being there at exactly 9:00 ). Although my coworkers have taken it upon themselves to pop up some quick porn music on youtube when I get in for the duration of my gearing down- just for effect, of course So just don't be surprised if you are suddenly the butt of a lot of stripper jokes for a while. Err, or maybe that's just me........ Sometimes, I love my job. Sometimes
On a marginally related side note, wearing heavy leather on your legs everyday is like walking around with training weights. You won't really notice the weight while you're wearing them, but you'll feel light as a freakin' feather as soon as you take them off. I hit my knee into the handlebar once attempting to put my feet on the pegs when I sat on a bike in a show room because I was so used to having to put the extra force into lifting the weight of the leather that I didn't think to reconfigure for lifting my cotton slacks. That was rather embarrassing actually..... ahem, yes |

I recommend "overpants".... as I wear scrubs and if I went down... definately would be nothing left of them or me at all if I didn't wear some sort of overpants...

What if I wear both?
Sometimes I wear some kevlar-(or heavy nylon)-lined pants / jeans, and sometimes I wear textile overpants. It depended some on the weather, though now that it's cooler whatever riding pants I am wearing, I most likely already have my dress pants underneath anyways. But, my favorite pants are definitely the overpants, especially now that it's getting cooler. I had to add about 4" to the length (they were 32", now about 36") with some similar-looking fabric in order to keep them from being highwaters when just walking around, and looking like clam-diggers while Im on the bike. But since then, they are my favorite pants both for the convenience and I like how they look compared to the more normal-looking riding pants I have. *editing for clarity*. Mostly, when I am going to school I will either be wearing my Brosh kevlar-lined cargo pants, or a pair of jeans i outfitted with some heavy (heavy as in like 1.5mm heh) nylon panels in the seat and hips (I wear knee armor at all times anyways, so the knee are isn't a real convern on those jeans). If I am going to work, I will typically wear one of those things over my dress pants (or just pack my dress pants into my pack if it is real hot out). |

I wear overpants and slip them off when I get to the office. If I'm going to the store, or something, I just leave the riding pants on and make strange swishing noises as I wander up and down the isles.

I have a set of over-sized textile riding pants which I ride with in the winter, but otherwise I usually just ride with jeans....
I've been thinking about a set of these: http://www.forwardmotionmc.com/p-234...ver-pants.aspx But really all I want them for is wind and water protection, so thinking about going this cheaper route: http://myleather.com/p/Leather-Chaps...aps/50823.html I really don't like textile....

I like the second pair of pants better and the price is very reasonable. Thanks for the info Spooph.
