Engine finally gave out, Need ideas

All right so my 300 engine finally gave out at around 65k miles, the cylinder 1 rod bearing left me searching for chunks of gold in the oil pan. At the moment its looking like a new piston, rod, and crank at the very minimum plus the smaller extras (bolts bearings , rings etc) So far its looking like;

~$600+ to repair
~$900 for a used engine
~$1100 for a ninja 400 engine
~unknown $ do something crazy with a random engine just because

I'm leaning towards the 400 engine (comes with wiring harness and ecu) to keep it a little more exciting of a bike, the 300 is tough to ride after getting off my street triple R lol. My understanding is that the 400 is a stroked and bored 300 and that the case is the same, is this correct? Not in any huge rush for this and depending on the route chosen there may be some cheap internals available for yall soon.

A 400 engine isn't going to just bolt right up I'm pretty sure. I thought there were major chassis and engine design changes that would make it impractical.

A used 300 engine should be a lot less than $900 at this point. We sold a low-mileage Ninja 250 engine (less carbs) in good condition for about $250 a couple years ago.

Normally a used engine is the best option.

Yeah everything near me ends up being about 900 all said and done atm, if you've got one for cheaper let me know!

from what i've read so far the chassis is very different correct, but the actual case for the engine seems to be the same.

No way will 400 engine fit. Rear swingarm bolts to rear of engine. You'll have to hack off most of rear of 300 frame to fit 400 engine. Which may make it nice and squisshy. Probably a lot of forward section of frame too as 400 sits high up in between perimeter frame. So you'll have to tilt 400 engine downwards at front if you don't cut out 300 backbone. It's easier to just build custom frame.

Not just engine, you'll need from 400:
- rear swingarm, shock & linkage
- rear wheel, sprocket and brakes
- tank & fuel-pump
- throttle-bodies, injectors and TPS
- airbox & MAP sensor
- exhaust, muffler, O2-sensor

For effort, you might as well get crashed and totaled 400 for ~$2000.

If you want more power with engine-swap, go with EX500. Much, much easier swap and more power than 400.

Best deal is used 300 engine. See them on craigslist, eBay and junkyards for about $200-400. Add $100-150 shipping. There's one with 12k-miles for $350 on eBay right now. Or $200 needing rebuild. Can swap engine in about 2-hrs

Used low mileage engine is your best choice for practicality. I think 300 motor goes for $400-500 on eBay maybe even cheaper.

Win.

EDIT: Not so much - "for parts..." - gotta read the fine print.

Would think you could find something reasonable though, there are plenty out there.

Wow, that's a lot for 250. If you're not in a hurry I would wait a bit I'm sure a $500 motor will pop up. Last year I bought a N250 motor as a gift for my buddy. I paid about $550 and it came with a cluster that had 8k on it, delivered to my friends garage on a nice pallet.

$800-$900 is just too much.

Here's one being parted out. Offer him $300-400 for engine after getting mileage and condition. Might even want to do compression-test before picking it up.

Sounds like you would be better off just rebuilding what you got.

Thanks a ton for the responses guys! Especially for that pic of the 400 frame that’s what I had been trying to find. Was wondering about a 450/500 swap as well, I think I’ve got enough projects in the garage for now though lol

I think I’ve finally settled on parting her out and giving back to you guys a bit for all the help on here, I’ve had plenty of fun on her and am ready to mix it up a bit. If anyone needs parts I’ll put new post up a little later this afternoon for the part out, frame has registration still so if anyone in SoCal wants a super cheap frame let me know!

From this ad: https://sacramento.craigslist.org/mp...46757112.html#

Guy says he has 300 engine for $750 (includes shipping to SoCal). Should ask about:
- engine condition
- mileage
- when last valve-adjustment was
