T-boned a car
I went through a yellow light and hit a cars passenger door. I'm just wondering what is considered a totaled bike? I don't want a salvage title motorcycle because I won't be able to sell it for much. Thanks. By the way the four witnesses that saw it said it wasn't my fault.

Your insurance company will determine if it will be totaled or not. Depends on how damaged your bike is. If total cost to repair is close to the actual worth of the bike or more, they will total it.
A friend of mine dropped his bike, and they totaled it. All it had was cracked fairings and a dented tank. They should issue you a check for the market value of your bike, so just buy another one. |

Vehicles are considered totaled if the cost of repairs (measured by MSRP, not what good deal you get from your friend. A side fairing costs $450 to them) is greater than 75% of the value of the vehicle.
Given that 250s are relatively cheap, but their parts can add up quickly, your bike is certainly totaled. |

Was talking with a service writer at a local shop that does a fair amount of insurance work and he couldn't remember the last time they fixed a 250. Unless it's less then 6 months old almost any accident will total one of these bikes.

Technically it's not MSRP, which was the manufacturer's suggest list price when it was new. Instead, it's the current blue book value from sources such as NADA, KBB, and Edmund's. For a good idea if it's totaled, go to a parts seller like http://www.ronayers.com and check out the fiche section. You can look up replacement costs for the parts that are damaged and add them up. If that list comes up to be higher than around 2/3 of the NADA book value then the bike is considered economically totaled, even if it's perfectly repairable from a technical point of view.
There is also the option of negotiating with the liable insurance company. In my case a person drove her truck into me head on at a four way stop sign. The '06 was considered totaled because the cost of the fairing, gas tank, headlight, instrument cluster, fender, and left muffler was over $4,000 and the book value was $2,800. I negotiated with the insurance company to keep the bike with a clear title and received a check for $2,400, and sourced the parts on the used market. I then took a paint class at the local community college and painted it myself, leaving my total out the door costs to get back to good cosmetic and running condition (excluding my labor) of less than $2,000. Some insurance companies don't like to negotiate, a lot depends on the insurance company representative and your politeness/demeanor. Some things to consider: The book value they use to formulate their first offer to you may be less than what actual market values are in your area. Often times the first offer is a low-ball. They try to guess the least you'll take without a fight and make that their first offer. The more knowledgeable you are about market values in your area and how your bike fits in, the better chance you'll get a good offer. Don't be afraid to politely respond with a counteroffer based on your research, and be prepared to provide prints of ads, etc. Also, you'll be getting two checks. The first one will be for property damage, it covers the bike, accessories, and your gear. The second offer will be for pain and suffering, doctor visit, medical bills, car rental, lost time from work, etc. Be sure to keep a well-documented list of all your non-property costs stemming from this collision, you have the absolute right to be compensated for them. Good luck! |

With it being one month old they may fix it, just because it's so new. Other then then the bent forks it's just plastic, if the frame is bent I believe it will be totaled.

If the frame is damaged it's a write off, you could always make sure that the frame is damaged before the assessor gets a look at it...

its not totaled, itll be like 500-600$ for fairings, youll probably need a fairing stay bracket, they tend to bend easily, 120-150$ and new turn signals, 20-100$ so all in all 850 worst case scenerio, so obviously not totaled :] but just be glad you came out with little to no injuries!

Your guys estimates are way off. Want to know what $4,200 of damage looks like?
I'd say my bike appears to be in better shape than the OP's and yet it only took 5 minutes for the adjuster to plug in all the damage into his computer and come out with $4,200 of damage on just the visible parts. He didn't even bother to see if the frame was bent.

Without doing an actual estimate, I'm going to bet it will be considered totaled. For one, the right fork (and likely the left) is very, very bent. Those run nearly $400 each. The Ronayers.com fiche doesn't list parts for anything newer than 2010 now, but in 2010 the side fairings are $236 each, the upper fairing is $191. The windshield is $117, and the front fender is $102. So far we're up to $1,658 for just some of the main parts. Headlight assembly is $202, the bracket it attaches to is $167. Right turn signal, $30. Cheapest part so far. Mirror? $53. Muffler? $398. Now we're at $2,508, and we haven't even started looking at the various little odds and ends like the plastics around the instrument cluster, etc.
If the frame's bent at the head tube, possible with an impact that bends forks, that's another $997. Also, the estimator figures in shop labor rates when calculating the damage estimate. Shop labor for a frame would likely run over a thousand bucks, all the other stuff probably around $400-500. There are standard rates for replacing each item, .5 hour for this and 1 hour for that, it all adds up. |

Anyway thanks for the pictures; I've finally now seen a closeup pic of the Zero Gravity dark smoke color. Since I'm about to pull the trigger on their sport touring windshield (which is taller) I'd been debating between light smoke and dark smoke. I don't tuck as a rule but I now think dark smoke will be too dark for me. Looks great in the DB size, though! |

Have you ridden an R1? You need amazing throttle control for it. The thing is super jumpy and unhappy at low speeds. (meaning less than 50mph for an R1)
A 750 on the other hand...well that thing is a blast. You have to let me ride it if you get one |

He was joking.
I rode my ninja for almost a year and still was never close to taking it to its potential. An R1 is generally not the best next step.

^^^^Give better advice based on help...not just post count^^^^
Talk to the insurance company....if they total it...take the money and ask to buy it back for scrap...if they give a fair price and you can replace everything with their money and have some left over DO IT! I did this with 2 snowmobiles and it worked out perfect and it was legal

How was my advice not helpful? It was clear and concise.
Let me elaborate. When you're going through an intersection, ESPECIALLY during a yellow light, when everyone's trying to get through faster, pay attention to the cross and oncoming traffic. Not only are they likely going faster than they would if it were a green light, but they're likely not paying attention. If they're not paying attention, then it's YOUR responsibility to be paying attention, especially since bikes are so much more fragile and the riders more exposed than in an automobile.
