Bandit 400 ?
I saw an add for a bandit 400 for 250$

Too good of a deal..
Bike is fickle but a beast when running well. Have a look at www.bikebandit.com...many parts are discontinued & those that are not,you may be surprised at the prices. For info,rubber manifold diaphrams USD 30 + each (x4) rubber spark plug boot USD 30+ each (x 4) Also good source of info at banditally bbs |

Obviously a gamble...
Yeah, if it will need carbs, find those first, then (if you dare) buy the bike.
I bought one in bad shape, took me a few months of weekends to rebuild and tune the carbs, only because the design completely depends on the o-rings and float valve being perfect. It will leak gas into the cylinders very easily. Float adjustment is super-critical, as is idle mixture, literally a 0.2 mm difference in float height or a 1/2 turn of your idle mixture screw will make the bike die hot or not start cold. Very touchy. And of course you have 4 separate carbs to worry about... Once I got it dialed in, it was really smooth, but it is a very peaky engine, lacks mid-range torque and past 8000 rpms is like a rocket and pulls past redline. I was getting 55-60mpg commuting, 50 mpg riding hard. I sort of regret selling it. I gave someone a great deal, it found a happy home. It was a little cramped as far as leg space and I wanted something I could ride all day. It would have been a great track bike--I did do a track day on it, but the rear shock (stock) was so soft, I just had no confidence to push the bike. Gas tank rust is a major problem with these bikes, and there are no replacements. Many will rust through or develop pinholes. So check the tank! |
