Do they make universal camera mounts for our gas tanks?

My wife gave me a Nikon Coolpix for my birthday last month, but I've been having a little trouble locating a solid looking mount with the suction cups for the gas tank. I keep coming back to the dinky gopro wide, but I don't want to spend more cash on another camera. I wouldn't be using it if there was the slightest chance of rain. I just want to be able to shoot some of me in the twisties or maybe my first track day.

I'd love to get a GoPro camera, but I can't justify spending the cash when I just got this nice one that records 25 minutes worth of video at a time. The quality isn't that bad either (see my exhaust thread elsehwere).

Got any recommendations? I plan on hitting up the dealer tomorrow to see if they have them (it could be possible). If all else fails, I guess I've have to search like crazy online. TIA!

I've used the "beast" method of mounting the camera. crude, but works well.

the one I got for 20 bucks works well for gas tank, uses the threaded screw to mount camera though.

I like those cameras that they mount on the tail on the bike (like in MotoGP). I'm afraid of getting one though, I'm not sure if they will make my ass look big.

Also, do they have audio? I'd hate to let one go and have it heard on the camera (does smoke come out when you do those things?).

They're blowing out the older VholdR because they have released the HD version, that provides significantly better video along with better reliability. $99 is still a pretty great deal for it!

Yeah the HD version look pretty nice and at ~$300 it's not too bad of a price for a 720p camcorder.

Maybe a little, but not too bad. Having it behind the windscreen virtually eliminates wind noise. Here's a couple of YouTube links to videos I took.

lol, not sure if this deserves its own DYI, but this is my first attempt at one, here goes

so it took me a little over an hour to make this prototype mount, and it still needs a fair bit of work. i plan to make it again with brand new clear acrylic, and attempt to get the bends nicer!

to bend acrylic u need a special heater, which i don't have, so i just used a heat gun... however that was a little too hot, and caused the acrylic to bubble up. ill need to come up with a way to gradually heat up the spots that i want to bend...

anyhow, i started with a picture i took out of the maual, and tried to come up with some ideas, and this was a rough sketch:

so then i got some card board, measured and cut out the form that i wanted, then i got it drawn up nicely on Cad, and had it printed out 1:1

once i had the 1 to 1 drawing printed, i stuck ot on some left over acrylic, and cut it with a hand held jig saw

i then heated the acrylic on the spots that i wanted to bend it, but that was a little tricky, since the heat gun is prity much like a killer hair dryer, and it kinda burnt some spots :P

took me several attempts to get the right angles, but i got there...

although at one point i did snap one corner off, lol

and it was quikly fixed with some industrial super glue!

finally when i got it all right, it fit in nicely, i had to put in some extra washers, and a longer screw bit, since there is an extra 5~7mm inbetween.

the first video i took was already late, and dark... however i noticed a lot of vibrations, i think its due to my camera being a little heavy, its an old cybershot, and also i think i need to pad the space between the windshield and bracket with a piece or rubber, in between the washers maybe, to help dampen the vibrations?... or maybe i have to reinforce the mount somehow.

so bracket version 2.0 might sit a little differently, and im hoping it might vibrate less. ill try to get another vid on my way to work tomorrow and see if it makes a difference shooting in the day time.

im still in the process of editing the video a little. turning it into a wide format, which looks slicker

ill post it shortly, if i'm patient enough to wait for it to upload after its done rendering the effects on Adobe premier...

this bracket was definitely fun to make, and when i get round to making a better one, ill post about it as well (as long as my camera has enough juice to take pics)

what i find neat is that when i take the camera off, i can see the control panel normally, since its see through!

so this is my quick ride home from work, i live practically around the corner...

please excuse the driving, i was working late on the bracket, and i was late for dinner at a friends house. well at least that's what ill use as an excuse now, any other videos i might end up uploading probably wont be much better, lol

i would have liked a camera with a wider angle lens, even just slightly wider would have been good, as it is, zoomed out as far as possible with my camera, it still looks like im sat on top of the people that were in front of me, ha ha...

for heating, perhaps hot water with a thermomter in it? or a small toaster oven that you can control the temp?

rofl, no, hot water wont be hot enough, or if it is, it would make the whole piece of acrylic soft, and it was be next to impossible to work with, since it would all be too hot to touch.

the toaster idea is actually a very good one thought, the actual heater for acrylic is similar to a toaster. the problem there is that i dont have a toaster, nor do i know anyone that owns one that lives around here.

i just did another video coming to work now, just downloaded it to my comp, and its looking a lot better, the jitter factor isnt as noticeable in the daytime.

ill have to edit it again at home and will upload it later tonight

we have security guards here 24/7, i was the last person out of the factory/office, so they already had it almost all closed up, and just waiting for me to leave.

the left side here is the right side to drive, the right side is the wrong side to drive! :P

you just wait to see the traffic in the morning rush hour, ha ha... i filmed the ride to work earlier.

ill upload it later when i get home, still need to do a bit of editing, and i dont have premier here on my office computer, on top of it, it'd take for ever for this turtle of a computer to render the video, lol
