Spring Gurus!!??
Got the late 06/08ish gsxr shock installed but as it is rather stiff I bought an early 02/04 version w softer spring. Okay, it doesn't quite fit and swapping springs is iffy as that one is longer. So graft it on w a bunch of preload to make it fit or shorten it? I only rode a few hundred on it and it wasn't terrible and that was w 1/4-3/8" of preload it came with. My sv's zx10r (510#)shock is great but the spring rates match. The 300 is supposedly 320# stock(I know-for light weights) but I believe the gsxr is 524#. Things may be fine w all preload dialed out so just pondering what is feasible as in other model spring. Thank you.

im running a 12.5 spring on my gsxr shock, im 190 lbs and .90 springs on the front.

Boney arse syndrome!!?
Yes, i need comfort. The GSXR spring was tolerable even w the bit of preload it had. After further surfing I found shortening a spring isn't possible wo heat treating setup after cutting/reshaping. Was hoping to find dimensions of various stock springs for possible swapping-someone must've done such a list. I added extra holes in Roaringtoyz links to raise a bit. Next week here it may get near 50 so I can ride around the block and see how latest setup works. Not much time until the only toy running will be the Snow Blower!

SV Spring!!??
Okay, got a 3rd shock. The 06-09? already mounted the 00-03 that won't fit and another 06-07ish(just like the 1st but w Schrader valve instead of needle hole. Paper weights/kayak anchors?? Well took the spring from stock SV shock as that got a ZX10 in '16. It fit over GSXR body fine and is very close in length. Filed the straight section of adjuster nut that fits in spring to a taper and used die grinder to cut away spring material so it would fit. On the clevis end I cut the tube section off the spring 1/2 moon retainer as it wouldn't fit in smaller ID spring. Not together completely so may add zerks to lever. Many months b4 riding season but at least we'll see how it sags.

Drilling and tapping a hole for a zerk fitting puts a stress point in the suspension linkage that makes it weaker. Whether or not the design is strong enough to handle that I don't know, but I'm just bringing it up.

BTW, cutting coils out of a spring makes it stiffer. When a spring is compressed the coils are actually being twisted. It is the same as if you could uncoil the spring back into a straight rod, clamping one end in a vise, and then grabbing the free end with big-ass pliers and twisting the rod. The longer the rod is, the easier it is to twist, the shorter the rod is, the harder it is to twist. So cutting out a coil on the spring makes it stiffer. |

Zerks are kool
I'm not worried- put zerks in Futura and had no issues. I didn't shorten spring just ground the inner edge so the adjuster would fit in.

Just bringing it up so that you know. even suspension links on a little can get more stress than you might think.
And just mentioning the cutting of the spring because you mentioned it earlier and a little bit of info for others who are reading. |

MAYBE
From my lifetime of working w materials & machinery I think it will be fine. A 1/4" hole doesn't remove much metal and the piece seems beefy enough to survive. I could be wrong which brings to mind a video from the TT years ago showing a shock or linkage failure that put the guy off resulting in broken leg(he was lucky as it looked scary). Thanks for your concern-maybe I'll Xray it after every ride
