Old engine in a new 250r?

I have a 2008 250r with a spun rod bearing, I am looking into purchasing another motor simply because this is the cheaper route. There were several older engines in my area that I could grab but no new ones and shipping is going to suck. I was told by a mechanic the old ones will fit and I do have to admit they look VERY similar... But I don't want to dump $$ into an engine that will not work! I am just wondering if anyone knows if the older 250 engine will fit into a new 08 + 250 ninja?

I have read that kawasaki used a lot of the same parts on the 250r from previous years so I am wondering if the just changed internals on the engine?

Thanks all

It will fiit into the frame .but the exhaust is totally different. Won't bolt to the head. Also the ignition uses a different timing. New bike is 35 deg old engine is 42 .the retarded timing. Will make the bike feel slow. But If you change the exhaust and add a Brt tis ignition. You will end up with more power .but that is more expence than getting the rioght engine.

Hmm. Does the older engine inherently make more power, or is it just due to the timing / exhaust / tuning differences?

And just to clarify, it definitely will fit, other than the exhaust? Just making note of it .

Older ones have better cams, for top end hp. I have an older head/top end, was gonna port and polish it. Throw it on the 08 I didnt notice the exhaust was different........ will have to look closer when we get home

Ooh interesting. Will the pregen head fit on a newgen block (out of curiosity)?

^ thread hijacker, LoL just kidding I have the same question because I have a perfectly good head off of the 2008 that I could swap so the after market exhuast will fit and newer technology and all.

Well it was already determined the engine itself will fit .

And from what I understand, it sounds like the new Ninja head is both harder to work on and makes less power :P . But if the heads and blocks (cases?) are intergangeable, then yeah it would be a simple and cheap way to solve your problem of knocking rods!

I've never looked at an old-gen up close but I know that the old oil drain plug location is blocked off on a current-gen and that the front sprocket has slightly different measurements.

How are the front sprockets different? I know aftermarket ones fit both generations.

The fitment charts were updated to say that but the old ones require a shim for perfect alignment. For example, JT Sprockets makes a new part but you can't seem to order it because most dealers only show the old part in their computer and their fitment lists are wrongly updated. It's considered "close enough," but it will cause a slight chain misalignment which can wear the chains and sprockets faster.

Ooooh ok I gotcha!

So, does anyone known about the head / block compatibility? So far it seems it has been concluded that you can indeed bolt up a pregen engine into a newgen frame, but that would require a custom exhaust.

I imagine the CDI isn't immediately compatible, but you'd also probably have an easier time doing the pre-gen CDI mod!

I think he mentioned it would work, but the less advanced timing would reduce output. Also, it seems like the wiring harness would still be of the original newgen, so installation of the pregen CDI shouldn't change any, right?

I can tell you that the engine will fit in the frame. I can tell you that the exhaust will not fit. I do think the wiring for the charging systen and ignition pick up may plug right up. I think they are the same plugs. The 15 tooth front fits both but a 16 fits the new engine better .All I did was cut the guard away for clearance. Any one doing this typebof mod will want and need the BRT-Tis and a Muzzy and K&N filter and jetting . I can't think of any other things to do. I want to see if a 1st gen head will fit wit h 13 to 1 pistons.
