I meant to add, thanks to kkim and G's bike for their pics, instructions and helpful hints.

And I can't believe how dirty my bike looks! I just washed it the other day....

Can someone post a picture of the polished lip with a red bike? I have yet to see what it looks like and I can't decide if I want to do it or not

Advanced Auto Parts stocks Mar-Hyde Tal-Strip II Aircraft Coating Remover.

It seems this stuff is so strong, you can spray it on your wheels, after removing them and taping everything up with Duct Tape, if you don't want the paint removed. The Duct Tape won't allow the remover to seep under the tape! Use your garden hose to wash it off. You may have to repeat once.

Finish up with:

Here's the bike with the rims polished using the above technique:

Hi Sam! Last pic shows up as a red X; you can't link directly to attachment files on other boards. It works for you because you're logged in to the ZX-10R site, but for everybody else it doesn't show up.

Alex, I wondered about that, since it wasn't an image extension! It's now corrected. Thanks!!

This was my original bike and so my rims came polished on one side, but the jerk who stole it last spring "re-painted" them with a combination of spray paint and a sharpie. I'd like to re-polish them. Is there a reason you did only the outer lip and not the whole wheel? Seems like it would look nice totally polished.

On that note, how difficult is it to remove the wheels if I wanted to polish everything? I've never taken apart anything involving the speedo, brakes, or chain.

I would think polishing the entire wheel would be a royal PITA. Getting into the wheel spokes would be a nightmare. I polished the outer rim faces cause they are nice and flat and relatively easy to work on.

I was thinking of using some kind of Dremel. Not sure what would take the paint off without damaging the wheel...

to take the paint off, use the paint stripper I used in the DIY... polishing, to me, would be the real bitch.

take a good look at the spokes... they have a textured grain under the black that IMHO would be very difficult to polish.

Balls, ok. Is there anything that needs to be taped off for safety/corrosion reasons, or is it all for aesthetics?

The other issue is that I had rim tape installed that the thief painted over with black sharpie. I got about half of it off with a pressure washer but need to find a way to get the rest off. Dremel?

is the rim tape still on there? if so, heat gun to soften the adhesive... it should peel right off.

Not sure yet, but if I do, I imagine I need to not get stripper near the rotor or the center hole, yeah?

Yup, it's held on /too/ well. Will try the heat gun next time I visit home.

if you're stripping the whole wheel, I'd remove the rotor and cover the center hole area somehow to protect the wheel bearings.
