R-0990 filter and stock intake runners

Hello.

I was curious as to how you fellow ninjetters are connecting the stock intake runners to the R-0990 filter? The runners are a very soft rubber and dont really see how they would make a good seal.

Also, what are the effects of just putting the filter directly onto the carbs? I am assuming the lower end of the powerband would benefit from the runners being used, right?

Thanks in advance!

You can slid the runners into the filter fairly easy. Ive seen some people put lube of some kind to help seal it. I have a pic of my filtr on the runners in my album. Id post the pic but im on my cell phone. I think with out the runners, it can hurt performance.

What are runners? The black pipes between the filter and the carbs?

Mine are mounted directly to the carbs. AFAIK, people only have used those runners with the filters to keep the filters from rubbing on the frame. Also, AFAIK, runner length would only affect performance if it were changed between the carbs and head, not between the carbs and filter.

I didnt even think of that. You are bang on!! I am glad you brought that up.

I would prefer to mount mine directly to the carb.

Thanks for your insight everyone!!!

Thanks Alex!

Eric, how did you get the filter on the carbs with out the unners? I tried doing that, but they would'nt sit on the lip far enuff to be able to tighten down. Have you tried both ways with and with out the runners? If so, did you notice any differnce?

Same here, doesn't rub on the frame at all...not even close.

The first time I tried to mount the filter onto the carb, it took 30 minutes of pushing and wiggling etc. Very difficult (even used some waterproof grease as lube) - be warned, if you push the filter to hard you can start to bend it. Evenly tighten the clamps and don't over tighten them otherwise the filter will pop off.

Now, I can pull it on and off no problem (after loosening it of course). My advice is to use some grease as lube, make sure the clamps are loose and have the screws for the clamps facing up towards the petrol tank on the sides.

Example (frame, screw, filter, screw, frame):
