5.8 earthquake originating in virginia

I just witnessed an earthquake while sitting in my living room watching t/v. According to current cnn news it was rated a 5.8 and felt as far as Manhattan . It apparently originated in Mineral, Virginia. I can't contact any family members on cell phones other than my brother who managed to call me. I hope everyone on the forums and their families are ok; apparently many cell phones have been disrupted everywhere from virginia to NY - cnn.

Anyone else feel it?

edit: It was just updated to a 5.9 and said to be felt in Atlanta as well as toronto, Ohio, North Carolina and Martha's Vineyard.

Hope everyone is ok! We get them here in Cali pretty often, but a 5.8 is still really decent!

Yeah seems most of the east coast felt it. It didn't interrupt cell service. The 30 million idiots texting their entire phone book "omg earthquake" is what interrupted service.

Well, Virginia has only had 25 earthquakes since it first became a state. It's the first earthquake I've ever really felt, fun stuff

Not funny. When you're 50 flights up a building can sway and fail. Ask me how I know.

I felt it. I knew it was an earthquake...

What you felt in ny was probably equivalent to a 3.0. And tall buildings sway normally. A 50 story building probably sways as much as 2 feet in the wind.

Felt it here in the Philly area. I was getting into my car and started to feel dizzy and "weird" then noticed my car was shaking....was like wtf, are we getting an earthquake? never thought I would feel one here quite unnerving considering Limerick powerplant is about 20 miles from my house and was not built to any kind of earthquake specs

Agreed, of course it was. But that plant has been in the news for being one of the ones least prepared for earthquakes, and most likely to sustain damage in a serious earthquake.

Correct, I exaggerated a bit. The point was that if we got a nice quake here I would be shitting my pants

Well probably closer to 1.0 than 3.0, it was more like feeling the vibrations of someone hammering on the wall next to you.

50 floors up with two feet is a too much, I'd get motion sickness. Does that even meet building codes in the bay area? Wow, I'm feeling nauseated already. I had a project on the rooftop of the B of A building in downtown SF and never felt it sway because buildings are designed to counteract those forces in California, totally solid. Out here is another story. Unfortunately, some buildings weren't built with modern technology (like the one I'm sitting in).

This was in no means a life threatening quake up here, I haven't felt a significant one since '89 during the bay bridge world series. However, it did catch me by surprise...would I have evacuated my building if I we're downtown? Heck yeah and I'd make a beeline to my bike!

I worked in the BofA building for a few years here in SF, and it was one of the more flexible buildings in the city. In wind it would sway noticeably, and in the small tremors, it would shimmy quite a bit. Wasn't in it for 6.0 or larger, but I'd imagine it would move around a surprising amount. The buildings here are built to eliminate/minimize damage during an earthquake, but by no means does that mean they are solid. In fact they are more flexible by being designed that way. The newer ones move around more than the older ones, and the BofA is a reasonably modern building. The one I'm in now is only slightly smaller (40ish stories), but it does not move around nearly as much in the wind or in slight tremors; I think it was built just a few years prior to the BofA tower.

I was sitting in class.. Felt it, but I thought I was just falling asleep + Train going by (tracks run through campus). Got an email from the university 30 minutes later saying there was an earthquake. Kind of cool, but so strange.

I would love to know what happens at full speed near a quake on a bike. I see a few people here in PA that didnt get much.

Near DC and in annapolis we felt quite a bit. Just curious how likely a wreck is during a quake.

Felt it up on the 8th floor here in Toronto. My buddy was over at my desk talking to me when we felt the building shake. I thought he was being an ass at first and said "Hey dude, why are you shaking my desk?". And yes, everyone decides to update their facebook:
