The two guys ahead moved to the left of the lane, maybe instinctively, or maybe consciously. The one with the video camera stayed to the right of the lane and got nailed. I can tell you for sure that all things being equal, I'll go the the far side of my lane when passing someone in the next lane. Big trucks can lose a chunk of tire tread at any instant, cars can randomly change lanes...
But I don't get to do that very often, because I nearly always ride on the most winding back roads I can find, and here in the tobacco fields of NC, there are a lot of them. |

I'm still not sure if the debris came off the truck, or if it was in the roadway and the truck hit it throwing the debris into the left lane.

Unfortunately the answer is, You don't/can't prevent this one.
Debris on the highway is my constant concern when I'm riding, so many bad things can happen when there's something lying in the road. |

That's a tough one.
Moving over to the left might have helped, but it's hard to say. Looks like there was a small piece that came off more behind the truck before the large piece flew off. That makes me think it was a tire coming apart - something we always need to be prepared for when passing a truck. If you knew you were going to hit it I would go into "dirt bike" mode - off the brakes, on the gas, and stand up to try to jump over it and ride it out. Might work. Might not. One thing he could have done is be better prepared to crash. Jeans and tennis shoes don't cut it when you are sliding at highways speeds. |
