How do you remove the grip?

I need to replace my left grip / clutch side and it's not budging at all. I haven't taken my heat gun to it for fear of melting the rubber. Any ideas?

If you don't care to keep it. Take a razor blade and cut it in half (Split the grip in half). From right to left or left to right. Not up and down.

Compressed air is the proper way to do it.
You put the nozzle under the grip and shoot air in and it magically becomes "loose" on the handlebar.

when you install them, clean the bar and the grip with alcohol, shoot air into the grip and slip it on the bar and it'll never move.

Once you see somebody do it, you'll never want to do it any other way.

I put arriette grips on all my bikes.. I've done this many times.

Used to do it with bicycles as a kid too.

Very very good Italian grips.

Never ordered here but here's the color span..

Thanks guys. I'll give it a go! Is it ok to use canned air? I'm not sure if I have any of the needle tips.

Since I didn't have compressed air I just pried up the edge of the grip with a flathead and sprayed some soapy water inside. Then moved the flathead around the inside of the grip while proceeding to press to the flathead to the other side gently (all the while spraying some water in there). Once I got to the other side is slipped right off.

Just order new grip and cut the old one off. The previous owner may have put super glue on it.

did you remove the bar end first? i didn't see you mention if you had or hadn't removed that first. if you didn't heat up the bar end screw with a small torch or heat gun. then stick a thin flat head in there and jab it all around to get the grip loose. that helps to fit the air compressor needle in there.

I removed the bar end in 2 minutes with no torches or other crazy stuff. I used my #3 JIS screw driver, wrapped a towel around the handle, gripped it with my stupid big wrench and broke it loose. The right tools for every job ftw

I'm transplanting my original grip to a new bar. Again, I'm not going to cut it off.

I've had good luck with rubbing alcohol. I use a screw driver to make a little gap, then I squirt some alcohol. It works really well.

+1 on pulling from inside to outside (pull it inside-out). makes getting it back on painless without using a lubricant also (do the same thing but in reverse, it folds over itself and nicely into place. don't know if it works so well with stock grips though since they're made out of what seems like titanium enriched rubber.

Yea it takes a little elbow grease but I got it off by using a small screw driving and slowly shimmed it in. Once you break the glue loose, it'll wiggle off. When you put it back on, use hairspray instead.

I say hairspray because it's got a soapy texture until it dries. Makes it easier to get the grip on. Goodluck with the repairs. Let me know when you finish. I have a few other scenic routes I'd like to plan for.

I've used just a spray can of clear coat. Not really necessary. Should be able to get it back on using the compressed air too.

a small flat-head screwdriver + WD40 works good too. slide the screwdriver in between the grip and the handlebar, slide the WD40 nozzle in, spray a little, and its lubed and ready to come off, lol
