Smallest possible front sprocket size

Hey Everyone, I'm a member of Waterloo Hybrid and we are a university hybrid SAE racecar team. We are currently doing prelim design for the 2014 car and are thinking of using the ninja 250 engine. We were wondering if anyone has ever used a 12 tooth 520 sprocket or if the Counter shaft is too large to accomplish this, I know the wear will be greater due to the small radius but this would be fine for our use.

Thanks,
Sven

I have never seen a 12T sprocket. 13T is probably the smallest you want to run. Why not get a bigger rear sprocket to get a similar ratio? you can use sprockets off at 03+ Yamaha YZF-R6 with a 520 pitch to broaden your search.

Welcome to our site, Sven !!!

As an engineer, you surely can use the attached diagram.

That is for a post 2007 engine.
Older engines have a groove at the end of the shaft into which a flat retaining washer is inserted and rotated, being fixed by two radial M8 bolted into the sprocket.

I recommend you considering double chains of smaller pitch as well as synchronous belts:
