Main 30a fuse keeps blowing
Edit: The original problem has gone away, but the source of the issue was not found. Bike has been out of commission for a different reason, so haven't been riding it. Possible related issue down below
As the title states, my main 30a fuse blew and so did a replacement. Im sitting on the side of the freeway hoping to get going again. The only thing I did was replace headlights. Bike worked fine for 30 miles then just dies. Where can I look? Last futzed with by broilmebk; October 25th, 2013 at 09:43 AM. |

there's a short somewhere if you blow the spare. get a tow home and figure it out in the morning where there's light. and you have the proper tools.
if it just blew the one but the spare works ride home fast and buy a spare fuse. |

Normally, the problem is coming from the last thing one changed.
I would go over my prior steps and see what + is touching ground before reaching the new head light bulb.

Could I try disconnecting the wires to the bulb or do they need to be connected?

Starter relay fuse? Make sure starter wire is not pinched and rubbing the frame on the right side behind to side panel and under the seat.

I think thats the fuse im not sure exactly. Its the one right underneath the back of the fuel tank. One end connected to the battery, another grounded to the engine.

yeah, that's the starter relay fuse. Make sure all your connection are secure and that they are not shorting out.

As I understand, you replace the headlight bulb earlier and the bike started normally (igniting the low beam, I assume), then when riding at night, the main fuse blew. May it be that the problem happened as soon as you switched to the high beam? Did you remove the bulb and even replaced with the bad bulb? If you have a voltmeter that can measure ohms, you can use it for tests, avoiding blowing fuse after fuse: any circuit that shows close to zero ohms is in short.

I had high beam on the entire 30 miles after changing both headlights. I was splitting traffic, maybe ran over one of those reflectors im not sure, I'll have to check my camera. But then all of a sudden bike went dead.
Good news is, the bike just started. Bad news is i dont know what caused it. I moved and checked all wires and connectors didnt see anything exposed. Everything was well insulated. I'll put everything back together and make sure it turns on again.. |

That was a really dangerous situation !!!
Hope it never happens again. If a road bump could caused it, I would find the source of this problem before riding at night again.

For shits and giggles:
Does your cooling fan work? Is the Cooling fan fuse Good (actually pull it out and test the resistance of it)? Are all the other fuses ok? With bike running, try tapping the Starter Relay (big round thing 30A fuse it attached to) and the Starter Circuit Relay (the one at the battery), what happens? Check resistance at starter switch (black/red wire)? Why is your dash red? R6's don't blow fuses. |

My bike has been sitting around waiting for a part for an unrelated issue, but the other day I went to turn it on and let the motor run for a while. When I revved the engine a bit, my brake light blinks (brake light mod) even when brakes have already been engaged. I don't know if this is related or when it started happening. None of my lights flicker or get brighter/dimmer when I rev. Just the blinking.
Is it related to this issue? Anybody know what's causing brake mod to blink when revving? |

ummm, so if you rev the engine without touching the brake lever(s), the brake light will flash?
have you checked system voltage when running? |

I have not. I'll have to get my hands on a meter to check. What should it be? So it should be a wire related to to brake modulator? |

Any live wire (or metal of a connector) touching ground would do.
