Question Shifting Issues

I have a 2007 with only 1700 miles. I rode it a few times, put it away, and when I went to ride it again, it won't shift out of 1st gear. I can get to neutral, but that's it. Doesn't matter if I am standing still or moving. If I lift the rear wheel off the ground, I can shift no problem. The minute the tire even remotely touches the ground, I can't shift again. I have been told it is probably a spring in the gear mechanism? Any thoughts?

Your bike has kawi's "neutral-finder" feature, like most kawis. This prevents the transmission from going past neutral into second unless the bike is moving fast enough. It makes it very easy to get the bike into neutral when stopped.

But - once you are going at least a few mph in first, it should let you click up into second without an issue. What speed are you going when you try to get into 2nd?

Red face Shifting Issues

Not fast at all ... just getting out of the driveway. I don't recall having this problem last year. Should I not be able to go through the gears if I have the clutch in whether moving or not .. like in a car? (Sorry to be so niave, but I don't understand the mechanics - new rider - and I have several people telling me different things.) I don't want to have to bring it in for service if it isn't necessary.

The neutral finder threw me for a loop, too, until I realized that's how it worked.

It shifts normally once you're on the road?

That's right, it doesn't work like a car. When stopped, it will not let you get into any gear position other than 1st and neutral. The bike needs to be moving a certain speed before the transmission lets you shift it into 2nd.

I don't know if it shifts on the road or not ... was afraid to take it out further when it didn't shift getting out of the driveway.

Thank you Alex. I will give it another try and get out of the driveway this time to see if it will shift Will be back if it still doesn't work. Appreciate the information. Learn something new every day.
